I'd like to start experimenting with infrared, but, for obvious reasons, I'd rather not "convert" my D70 to a IR camera. Does anyone have suggestion for an inexpensive digital camera around 4MP that can pick up IR?

You don't have to convert it. I believe there are few people using the D70 with the Hoya R72 filter quite successfully.

I think the Olympus 5050 has an IR setting that gets very good results. You can probably get a good used one for between $300 and $400. Check out Pitsaman's IR pics. I believe he's done them with the Oly 5050.

Nikon Coolpix 800 or 950 work really well for IR and you can normally handhold with these two. 1/60.

I think the Olympus 2020 & 2100 also are suppose to work.

I bought my CP950 off ebay fairly cheap.

Some of my attempts are at my Pbase

I picked up a Sony DSC-F717 on eBay that I use for IR. Although I can use my 20D, being able to shoot IR handheld is such a treat!

I just don't like the results I get with my 20D...so I opted for the Sony DSC-F707..which I also purchased from Ebay. It is a super camera that seems like it was made just for IR photography. I added 3 more pics to my IR gallery taken this morning....would love some comments/critique.

Thanks

Olympus 2100 works quite well.

However it is only 2mp, so I don't think that's what you're looking for. I haven't tried properly with my Panasonic FZ5 or my Canon A80 so I don't know whether they would give satisfactory results.

I have been doing lots of IR photography with my D70 over the last few days. I borrowed a Hoya R72 filter from a friend and got a ring to attach it to my 50/1.8 nikkor. The D70 sensor is actually very IR sensetive even without modification. I shoot mostly at f/11 or f/16 with shutter speeds anywhere from 1/2s to 1/8s. At f/1.8 I can get away with 1/30s and even faster in good light. I have a solid tripod, so the longer shutters are OK..

I don't think that qualifies as cheap though it may in the originator's book.

Thanks for the information. I just might try that. I had read elsewhere that D70s didn't do IR very well and saw a few website about how to take apart your D70 and remove an internal filter to adapt it to IR shooting. Since I'm NOT going to take my camera apart, I was thinking of getting some cheap used thing to shoot IR since I really like the effect.

I purchased a Hoya R72 filter for my D70s a month or so ago. I think it works really well, and no adjustments were made to alter the actual camera. Here is one photo that I took. I won't claim that it's the best IR photo, but for only doing it for a month, I think it is turning out all right.

could you go over the settings and filter(s) used for yours? I have the 717 and it's just sitting collecting dust so I might as well use it :)

thanks
