Does anyone else here, like me, only submit to challenges they think they have shot a good photo for?? Not meaning to knock some of the photos submitted, but it seems that some people submit photos just for the sake of submitting them.. Personally, even if I take a day out to try and capture a shot for that weeks challenge and I feel that none of the shots I got justify me submitting them then I dont bother. Before submitting a photo I study it, and ask myself would I score a 10 for it if someone else posted it? If the answer is no I then ask myself why.. For the 7 Deadly Sins challenge I just could not capture that moment I wanted so I haven't submitted this week... Although I knew as soon as I shot my lightsource photo it was a poster (I'll be gutted if it doesn't come higher than my Garbage photo (it came 9th) as I think this is possibly one of the best photos I have ever taken).. But then again as I learn this craft I guess even better photos are around the corner.. Maybe I am just too hard on myself..

I usually decide if I'm gonna participate in the challenge on Monday when the new topic is posted. If I decide to participate, I do submit my best shot that I come up with during the week. I don't submit for the sake of submitting though...

I agree with what you say, Mark. I submitted an awful shot this week JUST to have an entry, and I have felt bad about myself since the moment I pressed the SUBMIT button.

I have made a solemn promise to myself not to do that again.

All that guilt and there was an 'unsubmit' button just waiting to be used ;)

Actually thinking about it, it would not surprise me if a lot of people will be playing with shutter speeds, white balance etc this week and we see some of the best photos ever submitted... People will consciously take the lightng into account instead of just pointing and shooting.. I definitely think the winner will be one of the highest rated photos ever on the site....

No there wasn't, Gordon. I posted this with less than three minutes to go to the submit deadline. By the time I returned from making some tea, the deadline had come and gone. However, this brings me to a question:

Why can't there be an unsubmit button during the voting period? Unsubbing one's own entry doesn't screw up the voting averages or anything else. This would deal with (a) my situation where I embarrassed myself by submitting in the first place; and (b) those folks who feel that the voters are dumb and their picture isn't being appreciated. Might save an awful lot of locked threads in the forums :-)

I am submitting even when I think I do not have a 'top of the top' shot. If I think I have an 'ok' one .. I do it. I think it's an opportunity to get comments from people or to confront your perception of the challenge with others ...

Yep, for instance, this week was a departure for me. It's something I don't normally do, yet I've seen others on this site do this type of thing well. (boy it's hard to talk about a current submission and not give anything away...lol) I wanted to see comments and suggestions about this shot to learn and improve. 'Course, most of my comments this week have been mostly humorous, rather than helpful, but c'est la vie. :-)

I had choices to submit this week after the attempt to get some good shots but unforunately I chose the very very wrong one. Dole!! I tried to unsubmitted it but it was too late. I have to deal with this self-embarassment. However, I am having fun. I think that is the point, isn't it?

i submit something every week, even if i am not completely satisfied with my choice

i WAS hoping that this would eventually train me to not only shoot better but select better subjects, rather than get me in the habit of giving up --- after all, you can't learn to swim if you don't get wet

results are inconclusive; much more study is required :)

I'm a new member to this whole thing (still haven't posted any photos) and I've read some of the threads here. I just think that a website like this shouldn't be all about the top picture; that's a bonus. Anyplace where an artist (musician, dancer, painter, photographer, actor) can display his or her work is gratification enough. It's the oppurtunity that counts, not the ratings. It's the chance to be critiqued by fellow artists. Don't be so hard on yourselves; just let the art happen and lose yourself in it.

My very attitude exactly! Nicely put! I can say no more to this except that you be happy with your own work. I completely lost myself in my sins photo, in more ways than one, and I am STILL gloating over the end result. I have more feeling over the photo than anyone else in the world ever could, and I respect that totally.
Ok...I said I was going to bed....Now I really am.
LOL.
Have a great night everyone!

well, I am still new around here... this week I posted my second photo, even though I was not happy with the pic... I liked my Idea, but I never got the shot right and ran out of time... I have had good comments, except they are all like, "it's good but... it's nice but... I like it but...". heh, all of the buts are the same, and strangely enough, right in line with why I wasn't happy with what I turned in... however, I do feel that going through the effort to take a pic and submit is helping me to learn to use my camera, learn something about this art form, and giving me a chance to be creative... Also, I really appreciate those that have taken the time to comment, whether good or bad... much thanks! lesson learned this week: don't wait till the last evening of the challenge to try and get it right!

I've submitted to every challenge since I found the site. My thought is, I try my best to get the best shot I can for the week and let the chips fall where they may. I have weeks where I'm less then happy with my entry, but I submit it cause it's the best I could do. I've learned more from the comments I get on the less then wonderful shots then I could learn from looking at it and saying to myself, "This isn't worth posting. It can't win".

I submit when I think I have something interesting to say or to show.
I'm not always actually happy with the entry or don't feel that it is
properly 'finished' but I've avoided a lot of the challenges due to
lack of a decent shot.

My 'wineglass' pic is a good example - it was bad but it was an interesting
idea, which I finally worked out the following week.

I have submitted to every challenge except "Pencil" and "Childhood without Children", and this was because I was on holiday.

Even if I have a shot I'm not entirly happy with, I will still enter it. This is simply because I would like to get comments which will tell me how to improve.

Some comments will back up the reasons that I don't completly love the photo, and some will suggest new things, but it is all good!

Take garbage for example. I wasn't entirly happy with my submission for a number of reasons, but it turns out that other people really liked it. Sometimes it is worth taking the chance :)

I obviously meant since I joined, not since the site started.

My thoughts exactly darling kon.

Since joining I have learnt (from the feedback I have got) that while a little blur can be good too much is distracting and have set out to try and cut it down as much as possible =D
