Those are wonderful. Are you using the Hoya R72 filter? What shutter speed are they taken at?

How did you manage to get the colour back in?
The R72 turnes everything bright pink.

custom white balance

Oh - you are going to have to tell me a little more about this.
Did you set the white ballance before you shot the image?
What value did you use?

I'm impressed.

i just take a picture of a patch of brightly lit grass. And use the image for custom white balance.

Images taken with that CWB will have a 'near B&W feel'.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to just shoot RAW and set the WB to your liking in whatever you use to convert your raw pics?

my peecee to slow to process raw files... :(

These are my latest infrareds with my usual set-up - NightShot mode, R72 and an ND8, from the Sydney DPC GTG.

Love yours, never thought of using custom white balance on them. Looks awesome.

Is your 300D a modified one? Did you remove the IR cut filter?

Gotta learn a lot from you guys.. my recent interest in IR and day's one shoot with my new IR72 has resulted in a lot of noise and pathetic pictures....

2

These were taken at 6 secs, F8, 800ISO using canon 18-55 lens at about 50mm. I guess I need to tone down the ISO to about 200.

Also no post processing would help me bring it to 'whiter' effect than the current red.

:-(

Anyone helping??? All help is greatly appreciated.

I learned really fast that the Canon 18-55 lens has a bad "hot spot" giving a halo in the middle of the photo. I decided to go out and buy a Sony F707 just for IR work. Here is a link to some of my pics this past week.

try using ISO 100, f4 around 15 sec exposure. And of course, on a tripod. In the end it depends how strong is the sun shine on the spot u are shooting

1. Wait for a sunny day, go to a park or anywhere that have trees(its everywhere lah) with your camera and tripod. Before you start, do a custom white balance for your digicam WITH your R72 filter on. Either on a bright patch of greens or the blue sky, results will differ slightly.

2. After you do your custom WB, set your digicam to custom WB.

3. Attach your camera to your tripod, camera's setting is as per your preference. Shoot to your preferred composition.

4. Open images in any image editor. Do a auto contrast if your images are underexposed due to the filter. Select Channel Mixer, select Red Channel in Channel Mixer, slide your Red percentage to 0% and Blue to 100%. Now select Blue Channel in Channel Mixer, slide your Blue percentage to 0% and Red to 100%. That's the basic process!!!

5.Of course you can still further tweak your colours to your preference.

Hey Ching,

Would it be possible for you to post the photo before you did the post processing so we can see the before and after. I'm curious to see what the raw file looked like with the custom white balance before any processing.

It does not have to be the photo above, any photo will do.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Zerocusa for explaining this. I have another question.

Can you please explain the custom WB process again.... If I understand right you are asking me to take a picture if the clouds / bright grass with the filter on and then use WB from that picture.
I may sound stupid but this camera (300d) and in general the WB process itself is new for me.
Please bear with me and if you think it is too trivial then you may PM me ...

Also London these days is mostly heavy clouds with low light so I will wait to shoot next on a sunny day.
