This is not to be a discussion...just vote, please. NOTE: that this isn't to talk about certain limitations or anything like that...just whether or not you think we should...everything else can be dealt with later, if it so requires. EDIT: Please guys, seriously, we can discuss this later...just vote only. thanks.

Do you think that photographers should be allowed to clone out sensor-dust on basic challenges?

A) YES
B) NO

although I won't be able to tell people there's dust on their sensor anymore.. *waaaahhhh!!*

Still, it should be allowed to be cloned out... OR.. people should recognize that dust is a part of SLR life, and ignore it when voting.

heh

Sensor spots are major elements.

It doesn't matter, 2nd place texture had them quite obviously.

B Clean your sensor before going out. Frequent self maintenance using the blower is the easiest, do it when you change lenses. (C:

B, agreed.

I hate to be in the minority on a potentially controversial issue, but B - I agree with John and Tracy.. I think it also leads to a whole list of complicated issues. A dust spot that you can clean off isn't much different than a blade of grass you could've moved out of the way, imho.

Of course, my opinion has nothing to do with heida or her entry - it's certainly beautiful and well-deserving of a ribbon. It's just a general opinion that I hold, considering how I interpret the principals of the basic rules.

A, and include hot pixels in the ok-to-clone group LOL.

For sure. The rules are too subjective and hard to administer fairly anyway. There would be huge enforcement problems with a rule which says "Absolutely no spot-editing, except ...."

For precisely the same reason GeneralE said. Open the door an inch, and...

B - how can we be sure cloning was just to remove dust? [weak humor] All my dust looks like distracting elements in the photo I'd like to remove.[/weak humor]

B ( far to hard on SC to monitor)

A. I disagree that it would be that hard to draw a line - they do it all the time on borders, blurs, use of separate artwork (i.e. picture of picture), and other things. Come on - a spec of dust.

Besides, I think the SC should earn their huge salaries! ;-)

And how many photos do you think we'd have to review to see if it was just a tiny bit more than a speck of dust?

I'm not reviewing all 600 photos in an open challenge to see if it's "too much" spot editing, but that's what would be required to enforce this rule. Maybe they can email all the originals to you and you can decide ...

You'll do as you're told or turn in your badge! ;-)

Why do people assume that EVERYTHING is a slippery slope and the WORST possible outcome would result from ANY change???

I'm not assuming, I'm basing it on the evidence of about 40 years of observing human behavior. A logical extrapolation is not an assumption.
