I'm going to New York and I was wondering if anybody knew any NYPD officers? Friends or family. I am trying to find out what their "Ride along" policy is. I would like to tag along with a unit and shoot some pics and just get a feel for NYPD. I am Law Enforcement here but this would be an "Un-official" capacity. Any help would be great. Thanks

Just go to the nearest subway and try to take some photos. They'll probably find you and give you a ride. :)

Nick,

I did a ride-along with the 73rd pct. in Brooklyn back 20 years ago. It was a blast. After that,I knew what I wanted to do (although I'm doing it 150 miles north in Schenectady)

If I were you, I would call NYPD Adminisrtation at 1 Police Plaza and ask for Community Relations. They would be able to point you in the right direction. My guess is that they still do ride-alongs but I would be VERY surprised if they allowed the camera. Any picture you take while "with" them (making an arrest) would become evidence under the "Rosario" ruling by NYS Court of Appeals. That would open a whole "can of worms" (i.e. forcing NYPD to produce you to testify when and if it ever went to trial, giving the defense attorney leverage not to plea bargin the case because he knows that the person who took the photo lived in California and would not show up for all proceedings (and postponements), and if you did, he would just postpone it enough times so you wouldn't show up.) I could be wrong but don't get your hopes up!

Good Luck!

edit for spelling

Sorry, off topic, but I wanted to say, good to see another Capital District person on DPC! There's about 7 of us now I think...

Neil, It's good to be here. I've done my homework and keep an eye on all the Capital District people here on DPC. When I improve a little bit, who knows, you may get an e-mail from me wanting to get together to take some pictures someday.
