My computer is freezing up when I run certain apps. which I think is due to my graphics card being old, overheating and whatnot. I don't know squat about installing parts, so what I was wondering is if it is easy for me to install the new card myself or not to chance me messing things up more and have a "pro" do it?

doing it yourself shouldnt be a problem, i never had any hard core expierence with computer hardware other than reading the manual, and i built my own computer from scratch

just make sure you push the card in all the way and have the powr cord out of the power supply or else you will fry your mobo

edit: fixed typo

I'm pretty sure he means "shouldn't be a problem." It's quite easy, one pulls out, the next one pops in.

Fetor, must be the pigtails effecting your brain.

Make sure you find out if it's a PCI or AGP card and also lookup your motherboard to see what AGP speed (4x,8x, etc.) it is capable of supporting. Get an 8x AGP if your budget can manage, though try not to be tempted by getting a card with gobs of RAM...128mb is sufficient for most purposes these days.

You can spend $50 and get more video card than most apps will ever require.

I would agree with bledford if he is talking about 128 ddr memory on board the vid card. I would suggest the following for graphic art viewing.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - //www.shopping.com/xGS-20729799~NS-1~linkin_id-6019813

Pine XFX GeForce4 Ti 4200 - //www.shopping.com/xGS-20659350~NS-1~linkin_id-6019813

Personal recommendation - Nvidia GeForce 7 series - //www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7800.html

If you decide to one of the latest and greatest make sure you have space in your case for the big fans and heatsinks that are now present.

I have a 6800 Ultra from Nvidia and that sucker takes up 2 slots.

oh yeah ive seen those, they are huge, its like putting a cinder block on your mobo

Look on ebay for ATI Radeon 9250, it is a half card with analogue, TV and DVI output, best of all 256mb DDR ram for under £50 in UK!

Good, reliable performer 8x AGP backwards compatible with 4x & 2x AGP.

Steve

edit...9550!! what great value!

Nope, other than playing Guild Wars I'm strictly a console gamer.

Well anyway, I bought a GeForce Mx 4000 128 MB card yesterday. Not the greatest card in the world, but what can you do with a limited budget? It serves its purpose well though.

Oh, and installing the new card was very easy.

I don't prefer ATI cards, if ATI knew how to build drivers to push their hardware. I will continue to stick with GeForce until ATI gets their drivers up to par.

All I was going to say is don't spend a lot. I have a $50 card and it works great. When I get ready to play UT2004 or 2005 again though I have to put in my better card.
