I have just taken a look at the image. It is made up of 4 frames, the second frame shifts just the gut up a bit and is then changed to negative on the 3rd frame without any shifting, the negative 4th frame then returns the shift back to normal for the ultimate change back to the normal b&w 1st frame.

It would seem the trick here is the change to negative which fools the brain.

Certainly removing the 2 negative frames or the two b&w frames just causes a jitter and does not create the falling effect. Likewise repeating the entire sequence with just b&w or negatives with 4 frames results in a jitter.

So it is only related only to the swing from positive to negative.
