What are we doing here?

Anything goes?

Woo HOO! A challenge with no qualifying description!

Independence can mean so many different things to so many different people - let's hope the absence of description puts a halt to all the "doesn't meet the challenge" comments!

I would say Free Study
07/10/2005 11:33:13 AM · #4
Sort of free study BUT with a starting point for ideas and concepts...
A loose hug to hold all the diverse entries together rather than a tiny box to squish them into!
07/10/2005 11:39:09 AM · #5
Does the word Independence play any actual role in the entry?

As a one word guideline?

Awesome but I have no ideas popping into mind...

Oh no! Where's my box?
07/10/2005 11:42:13 AM · #6
Or it could mean you have the independence to shot whatever you like! Trying to define it will likely lead to those nasty "does not meet challnege" comments.

I like that idea...although I think you'd get a lot of does not meet challenge comments if you took a picture of a brick or something.

Hey! A brick works. Many countries got thier independece throwing bricks!

Independence could mean being able to drive for someone that just got their drivers license...........

I have no idea where to start...this is a VERY broad topic!

It's embarassing but I'm completely stumped at the moment.

Heh, I'm opposite. Have a great idea, but not the things I'd need to make it a reality.

Ah well.

I don't think it is broad, it is just a difficult concept to communicate through imagery. I expect a lot of photos with a very weak link to independence.

If I were in New York, Statue of Liberty would imediately pop into my head.... Any guess how many of those we'll see in the challenge?

Think we'll see a bunch of elderly in power scooters? (sorry, I'm going to be struck by lightning).

I'm glad they did this AFTER July 4th. It's great - hardly any boundaries on this one. WOO HOO. This shall be a fun one. I can't wait to see everyone's interpretation. I already have two ideas in mind, but have to find the right "subject" to be in it.

I hope not to see a lot of patriotic american images (no offense intended). I realize that to some these images will say 'independance' very strongly however this may be the time to try and think outside that box. Just a thought.

Well, this is certainly an interesting answer to the question of what to do about site growth. I'll be very interested to see how this goes.

Personally, I plan on modifying the EXIF information on one of my fireworks shots and submit that. ;-)

"a very weak link" ??? How strong of a link do you expect when there are no challenge details? I think it encourages a broad interpretation, similar to a free study.

Or maybe the real, intended meaning is that you don't have to depend on photo-editing software.

Just kidding bear, don't get your pressure up, lol. ;)

You know....I'm not sure.

I see the concept of independence as having something to do with the image.

If I enter, my image will have Independence as a theme in there somewhere but my vote will be open to those who see it differently, to any degree, since nothing is stated having no description.

I assume if they meant Free Study, they would have said Free Study but who knows?

Whatever you submit you should be prepared to get the "does not meet challenge" comment. This is not a free study. You will certainly be disappointed if you treat it as one.

When a voter looks at your picture they will say to themselves, "Independence?" To some people that means fireworks, the American flag, and U.S. Soldiers. To others that means running around buck naked on a beach.

If you post a photo of your stinky feet propped up on the coffee table while your parents are gone, because to you that means independence, you will certainly get vibed for it.

I've submitted many photos trying to push the meaning of the challenge, and I got the comments telling the photo didn't fit. That's fine. Now when I photograph I keep those comments in mind. No big deal. I try again.

So, if every one of your comments say your photo doesn't meet the challenge. Ask yourself why and move on. Next week there will be two more challenges.

Remember, the prettiest photo in your opinion isn't always the winner. It is the photo that succeeds at being meaningful to the most voters. In this case, if a voter doesn't feel "Independence" when they look at your photo their vote will reflect it.

We just need to keep in mind it is Basic Editing. I don't think that has been mentioned yet.

Actually, my sparring buddy coolhar referred to it, LOL. And yes, I take it in good fun.

This is kind of fascinating, really. I mean, semantically speaking, if I wanted to be REALLY independent I'd ignore the very word independence in the challenge title; it could be seen as a green light to "ignore the challenge", in other words. It's quite the little one-word bag-of-tricks they've thrown at us, and frankly I'm in awe of the deviousness of this challenge..
