In many ways it works, although it might benefit from better separation (just a tad) of the darker ends of the boat and BG/water. A larger problem is the extremely tight cropping on the bottom, especially combined with the excess of negative space at the top. I take it this is a strobe shot of the boat? Interesting.

I really like it, but with some editing it could be better. Contrast maybe? Just play around with it. Striking shot though. :)

Damn, I just opened that puppy in photoshop and it's a DAYTIME shot, burned down a tremendous amount. Amazing how much like strobe it looks...

Here's a photoshopping of it to give it a little more tonal range and luminace while keeping the same general appraoch. The sails, hull, and wake were selected and levels were done on them and faded. Then the inverse selection was loaded, the background was zapped in contrast, layer set to exclusion, and faded.

I like the original much, much more. The second more photoshoped photo looks too photoshoped to me. I also don't like the red on the hull in the second photo. The lighting doesn’t look natural. In the second photo it appears that the sun is coming in from the right, but the sails are illuminated from the left , which also causes slight confusion leading to discomfort on my behalf.
I really like the first photo that you posted quite a bit! I think that the first photo is more artistic than the second. If you look at both of the photos side by side the original looks more like a real piece of art, while the second looks…. well photoshoped and unnatural to say the least.
The first photo conveys truth and a feeling of solitude and determination while the second photo doesn’t really convey as much.
I like the first (darker) photo quite a bit. I added it to my favorites, not because I’m a sailor, but because it’s a wonderful piece of art in my opinion. It’s not just another photo, it’s beautiful. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

I also prefer the "night" feel of the original shot, but I agree with bear that the framing could've been better. The boat should go into the darkness, not into the edge of the frame. I cloned some dark space in front of the boat (would also like to add something below but how?) and re-cropped it
i think it is better, what do you think?

Thanks for the comments. Any ideas on how to create more space below the boat would be very welcome.
For those who asked, this is not a strobe/night shot. It was taken on a very overcast day and heavily photoshopped to create the effect. It's one of a series called "Sails" I'm trying to put together on my smugmug site. For interest, the original is here.
