So I decided on //www.mikeschneider.ca for a domain name and I discovered a sweet-ass tool called Simpleviewer to set up your online gallery.

It looks really professional and I'll use it until I can afford to (or learn how to) set up something more personalized.

I just have some sample photos up (which need to be resized to get rid of jaggies) to see how it looks and I'm very happy with it.

What do you guys think? Will this look professional enough as a start?

some amazing images. Like the layout - simple and uncluttered.

Very nice. I need to revamp my website. This gives me something to try.

Do you have a link for the software?

By the way, if the page gets screwy when you click on it it's because I'm playing with it...check back later if you want.

Thanks for lookin' - I highly recommend simpleviewer.

I think simpleviewer is all you need... looks very professional. Great shots, too, even if they are just samples (you took 'em, right?) Did you get your computer problems all straightened out?

It looks good Mike. Very nice images. I use simpleviewer as well on my site and like it alot. I would recommend it to anyone who is not savvy in the ways of building a website, such as myself. It's very easy to use and it looks good.

Yes, finally! That's why I'm finally able to concentrate on kickstarting the 'business' portion of my path!

What happens if the visitor to your site doesn't have Flash installed?

Very nice, maybe I'll give it a try.

It should detect it and offer to download.

Perhaps I should make a simple .html version as well for non-flashers? I figured most internet users are flashified by now...especially those looking at my portfolio. Something to think about, though...

I'm getting this:

Mike Schneider Photography
Galleries:
Europe XML Parser error: not well-formed (invalid token)

JAlbum also makes simpleviewer type albums and is more customizable if you need to be able to change things.

nikolai mozilla(firefox) handles xml a little differently, apparently the simple viewer didn't accomodate for it. For the time being, when you see that error, try using a different browser like IE.

I was going to develop a customizable flash portfolio type open source tool for my friend who is actually a photographer ( as opposed to me doing it as a hobbie ), but been swamped with work since I got out of school. I hope I can get a backer to develop it at some point.

P.S. I'm gettin errors out the wazzoo from this thing! =o)

Yep, not a problem...I'm working on it as we speak. This particular error was because a filename was too long. It will be up and down for the next several hours.

The link to simpleviewer (in case you can't access my site) is here..

Should be a little more stable for now...

I can't read whats on top (banner?)

the photo's and navigation are working fine.

Mike, this doesn't seem to work that well in IE while works decently on FF.
Also on firefox, I see blue-colored links ( for gallery and contact) which don't go with the black background, you might like to change link colors

I have been using simpleviewer for a while now and it works great, but yeah you need to make the thumbnails yourself, that kind of sucks at times...

There's a javascript error on the page. It looks like it can't find a javascript file or the javascript code can't find one of the referenced items.
07/08/2005 10:22:08 AM · #21
Yeah, it's all still under construction...I just wanted to show you the simpleviewer part.

And gaurawa, you don't need to create the thumbnails yourself if you use the 'automatic' version and use server-side scripting.

I have played with simpleviewer for awhile until I found a new one. :)

I'm testing on my web site right now.

Jason - It does look nice, however it's a bit slow to load for dial-up users like me. I know...perhaps not that many of us left, but I live out in the country and can't get cable, DSL, etc...

I thought for a bit that something wasn't working when I selected one of the images to view, then I saw the %loading walking it's way thru while loading the image. Would be nice if that was closer to the nav bar, like centered in the page where you expect the image to show up.

Just my 2cents. ;^)

And, of course I have a very simple website under construction out there myself ==> glad2badad-images

as a web designer, I obvioulsy would prefer to do it myself in flash, it really isnt that hard. but I suppose if you can tbe bothered learning flash then this is pretty useful.

The fact that it is not personlised isnt good if you want to stand out. I know it is really the images that should sell you, but a fresh and unique website would be much better. Plus the viewer will need to download flash and simpleviwer if they dont have it. Also this is quite a slow method for image load

Now a plain html site would capture more viewers. You could have a splash page where they could choose?
