Hey All,

I am not going to submit to this week's challenge, Seven Deadly Sins. I think I am getting brainwashed into trying to get a submission in, any submission, whether I like it or not. Such is the case with this week's entry and last. Both are performing dismally on votes, which has somehow become important to me.

I entered this site with an idea to learn, but I have gotten away from that. I learn alot from my own comments, beleive it or not. It helps me think out the process I should be going through with my own shots. I will continue to vote and comment on the pictures. I want to focus on my quality not on my quantity.

I will be entering (and winning) the dpchallenges in the future. Watch for it :). I just need to take a back seat and watch for a while.

Mark, I have been feeling the same way. I haven't been getting any good comments to help me get better and my scores don't seem to be doing to good, so I think I will just sit back, relax and watch and learn.

You have a great attitude about the whole thing and for that I too believe you will win in the future. :)

I am enjoying taking picture of the fall colors here in Wyoming. They are beautiful!

self censorship is the first line of defense against posting crappy photos.

Yup, something the internet makes harder and harder too.

Lots of the on-line galleries and web sites could do with throwing
out about half the pictures to leave the really good ones. I
know I suffer from this. It is a hard task to edit yourself. Perhaps
finding someone who you trust to pick you appart constructively could
help too.

There is a reason portfolios are usually only a handful of the best
of the best...

Do not count your self out. In the garbage entry I was going to do the same.
On Friday I picked up my wife from work and started to play with the camera and some garbage. I liked what I saw and entered it.
Its in the 5.0 and going up (I hope). I took about 60 shots. Only one I liked. May be you will do the same.
There are times when you trip over the photo.
Just have your camera ready.

I prefer a shorgun approach to learning. I like to try everything and submit everything. I dont much care if it scores badly. My Something New submission scored very badly but taught me a lot.

Experimentation is the key for me.

That's not always true. People with low self-confidence can look at everything they do and find it "crappy". This has been my problem since I was a kid, and I'm only just getting over it. It's very therapeutic to throw all my stuff out there and actually find out people like some of it.

I have a fairly large portfolio now of 3d animations and still renders that I've been working on for two years (since doing a short course and working on student films at the AFTRS in Sydney), thinking that when I had enough good stuff I'd start seriously looking for a real job (rather than the bit of freelancing I've been doing). But my "self-censorship" has been telling me all along I wasn't ready yet. I've always had the feeling that my next project would be "the one" that would make my showreel good enough to send it around. Recently, though, I applied for a really exciting course at a film school in my city, mentored by professionals, which will almost certainly lead to that real job I keep putting off. I put lots and lots of work into my application, stayed up all night to get it finished the way I wanted it, sent it in, fretted about it, and ended up being in the shortlist of 50 candidates. That was pretty cool, but then I thought I probably wouldn't get any further. I went to a meeting just over a week ago, saw a long presentation about the course, felt more and more like this was a really important thing for me to do, but thought I didn't have a chance. Then I talked to one of the mentors, because we had to tell them whether or not we definitely wanted to be considered for the course. After a little bit of discussion he said "So, OK, I'll put you down on the list right? Because I saw some of your work, and... WHOA!"

After that I realised I've probably been sitting on my showreel for way too long :). That's what self-censorship will do to you. Get your work out there, get it critiqued, and THEN bury the stuff you realise isn't good enough. But let most of what you do see the light of day in some way or another.

Oh, I got into the course, it starts next Monday and goes for 10 months :).

By the way, here's some of my recent work that isn't on my website yet (there are quite a few things I've done recently that I haven't put up, and I realise that talking about it will probably lead people to want to see it.... I should work on that :)).

Mark - Keep throwing stuff up my friend! You have some great pix there (especially the traffic lights) - dontlet anything keep you from creating (this site is very good but it is not earth itself!) You have a great camera that is very cheap to use - burn it out! Just like picture taking - you only get one or two for every 24 to 36 of an idea or thing - post to your own eye and when you don't have the Sony with you take pictures by looking - do not quit even for awhile if this activity interests you - engage in it as often as your creativity keeps you interested! I hope to see you post a 'I take it back' (And for others that agree with lisae and this statement but don't say the same thing for this man ... then there really, really isnt enough to do on this site!!!!)

lisae - I like your characters best! The pendants are cool - have you ever looked at calligraphy styles and done the stroke count thing for characters?

John,

Thanks for the words of encourangement. I tend fully to pursue the fine art/science of photography. I think I have the composition and idea aspects of competition down fairly well. I need to bone up on my techniques.
This week's challenge entry (don't look if you don't want to know) is of rather poor quality image-wise. I hate to sound like an artist, but it was not my "vision" for this week.

I want to explore shooting what I see in my head and getting it right, rather than dropping it to move to the next week's challenge. I enjoy the different topics - and I will submit photo's in the future. I will even submit to other sites and ask for critiques on this one.

Thanks again for the input, it is a much needed "pick me up!"

Thanks,

Mark

I´m very new to this site but is it OK to tell people which photo that is yours before the voting is over???

I personally think it is fine, some don't... that is why I gave the option in the above message. Some people think it skews the voting more depending on whether or not you like the person, rather than the photograph.

Carsten, it is not acceptable to reveal your shot in the forums or to talk about specific shots while the challenge is still going on. If you want to communicate privately with another member about your pic then go right ahead :o)

Actually it doesn't violate any of the current rules to reveal your photograph, but it does violate the spirit of the rules and is frowned upon. And it will almost certainly cost you points because some folks feel strongly enough to go to any revealed shot and lower it to a 1. So it's a bad idea, but not unacceptable...

I think how I did it was acceptable, don't you? Shame on you if you look when you didn't have to... and if you do, go ahead, I don't mind.

Well, you can have different opinions about this matter. For me it´s quite clear not to tell anyone about my shot before the voting is over.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me. But you should be aware you risk the wrath of some 'purists' that will drop your vote for it. Of course, wrath being one of the 7 deadly sins, you might be able to parlay it into an entry for next week :)
