Thank you all for the comments and suggestions on my pics.
But looking at my profile and reviewing my ratings.
It looks like I should be in last place in a week or two.....
Considering the endless possiblities that my camera is capable of.
I guess this big kid bought more that he can possible use at this time.
I thank those of you who commented on my pics and gave me advise. But until I can get better with my photo's I think one less picture to evaluate the better.( At least at my current skill level )
I will still visit this site but more than likely not submit.

One thing for sure, This site has open my eyes to my beatiful surroundings.....

Musicman,

Don't get discouraged! I just bought a 717 and I admit it's a little daunting, but it is learnable.

As for scores...screw 'em! Stay here, read, learn and to hell with what others say or think about your photos. If you pressed the shutter, there must have been a reason.

Bio: I'm just starting my interest on photography. My goal is to learn as I go to become a more rounded photographer.

That's your bio..... so perhaps you need to not worry about the specifics of the challenge for the time being and take some pictures that you like and post them here for us to critique..... I'm sure most of us would be happy to offer some advice.... and who knows, along the way you might start to spot things that would be good for the challenge on that particular week and enter it.

Don't give up, that's the easy way out.... if it was all easy where would be sense of satisfaction the comes from seeing yourself improve. Ask questions, even take the time to try and emulate photos that you do like.... but don't give in....

that's too easy....

Cheers,

Todd.

I agree Musicman. Don't put too much thought into the challenge scores, really. I've entered one challenge finished 103 out of 116, with 11 1's and 9 2's. Well reading through my comments one would think my photo would have done better. Not the case.

So, the way I look at it is. Sure, give my photos all the low scores you want, because you don't like the subject or can't bare to spend more than 60 seconds looking at it. But without a comment justifying your score, it'll be nothing more to me than a meaningless number. Just go after what YOU want to accomplish and leave it at that.

Musicman,
I just took a look at the pics you have entered. You have recieved some very helpful and honest comments, which I feel you need to study to help accomplish your goal, as indicated in your Bio. I think you have a good eye for great pictures, which a study of basics can only help. Go ahead and take a vacation but don't give up, you have a camera that will do the job for you, so practice a bit and come back and give it another try. I have been participating here for nearly a year now, and I would like you to take a look at the ups and downs of my entries. Don't get discouraged.
Remember the main thing is to have fun!

I'll ditto autool...I don't even have a "good" camera, but I try and submit every week, because coming up with the idea is part of the challenge. I gave up worrying about the score after about two entries...I'm much more concerned with the comments. And just one comment from someone "moved" by your picture can make the rest irrelevant...

hey musicman,

wanna swap cameras? LOL

no seriously, practice makes perfect, or just have fun, coming up with ideas is most of the appeal for me

all i can say is that you should hang in there. i have finished near the bottom and it took me literally *50* challenge entries before I got a top 3.

dont give up!

Ya mag is my rolemodel. He has 2 shots in the top 3 but it took him purty darned near half a year to win one. That's what I'm aiming for. ONE ribbon. :) It doesn't have to be next week. But I WILL submit a decent shot. That's all I can do.

Well... after being ..and hanging with DPC for 6 months... I find..a few interesting observations....#1... I am still married...#2... It is in fact harder than I thought....#3... I am improving....#4... I still love my Mavica....In fact I am proud to be part of the "Mavica Gang' as is Sandra...#5...The Coolpix does in fact have a big learning curve..but it has been fun.. and we will continue to submit...drawing from our home in the Desert....with the "washed out"..Skies...and desolate atmosphere....lol It has been frustrating... but again also FUN...take a break.... but stick with it

Do #2 and #3 refer to #1 or to your experience as a photographer?
05/07/2003 05:24:08 PM · #12
Well Paul ..... I was talking of photography...lol.. but God Bless my wife...huh...I have always checked out your pics and scores.. and used you as a model... a perfect example.. with the right attitude.. where the points add up.. but the score doesn't matter....lol...I wonder who's line that was...??
05/07/2003 05:35:00 PM · #13
Thanks, but I'll have to confess that sometimes it's a "do as I say, not as I do" situation...
05/07/2003 05:45:23 PM · #14
To echo everyone else: don't give up, learn from your submissions and work to improve. Also, don't get too hung up on scores and ribbons. One of the pictures I liked the best of all my submissions (for the Flora challenge) is my worst scoring. Yet I got up at 5.15am to get that shot.

Keep plugging away, take pictures *you* like, and it will start to get better. It certainly can't get better if you give up.

Good luck.

that was my point.. you don't alway do what is "right"...but have fun with it... and not worry the numbers...taking a picture in your car.. with one hand on the wheel...lol...we travel.. and I have been there.

How can you ignore these comments. I am in total agreement with them. I've been involved with photography for years, and it took years to get to the point where I actually liked my work. Now that I do like what I do that is all that matters. One thing that kept me going was even in my worst shots there was something good about it. Maybe I just needed a better angle next time or less DOF. Take a break if you must, but do not quit - just relax and have fun with it.

Best bit of advice you'll ever see.

If you do skip the challenges for a while why not set yourself a personal challenge, taking shots of something you like with no time limit. Then post the best up here to get some feedback.

I would like to thank you all for your support. This support has given me the jolt to push me to next level. I have acceptence that I s-ck. But I know now that it just a matter of learning my equipment, becoming more focus (literaly - per comments)and just having fun with my trigger finger. What I think I felt was just growing pains or lack of...
I have already discoveried a feature on my camera I was not using to improve my shot.

Thanks again.

Thank you to all that talk me out of taking a vacation.
I did hit rock bottom 2 challenges ago with 98 of 99 placement.
99 was probably a wrong file sent.
Now, the good news...
My last challenge I spang back up with a 21 of 227 placement.
Avg score being 6.2
Currently I am above 6.0 again in this current challenge.
Thanks again to all.

Good - really good. Perseverance is an amazing thing: just at that moment when you think 'I've tried and tried, and I cannot see where I'm going wrong, or what they don't like about it' is often the point at which the breakthrough happens. Really pleased for you Musicman - keep at it (and I wish I could do 6 two weeks in a row) :-)

Hang in there Musicman. I know how you feel. Look at it as a learning experience. My wife gave me some good advice: You don't have to enter every challenge. Only enter when it feels right.

Excellent showing :)

Don't get discouraged by the scores here... Let it be encouraging in such a way that it helps you improve rather than causing you to lose interest in the hobby :)

Musicman, if it's any consolation, I gave your Primary Colors shot a 7 - I really liked it a lot. I felt that the red rims/decals on the car were very well presented, especially since the car itself was a very neutral grey. I even loved the lighting - gave it a bit of a "Fast and the Furious" feel to it. Looked like a street drag race ready to begin. I guess I saw what you saw when you first saw the car in the lot.

Good luck in the future. Personally, I would kill for a 6.2. I won't even begin to talk about 2 6's in a row.

Musicman - Glad to hear of your recent successes. It's amazing what a little taste of success will do to reinvigorate a sagging ego. I was feeling the same way a couple months ago. I was taking scads of pictures and nothing was coming out the way I thought it should. For the cliche challenge, I had 6 pictures that I was considering using. At the last minute I went with something different altogether. It wasn't wildly successful, but it made my top 4. Since then, I've done pretty well finishing over 6 or very close to it in all but 2 challenges.

I've taken a few challenges off now too, but not because I don't want to submit. I've taken scads of photos, but the challenges haven't suited the photos I've been taking. It's a good break for me right now. I'm looking forward to the coming challenges though and I'll once again gear myself toward succeeding in them. To me, the score matters. Not everyone agrees. Maybe most people don't, but its the affirmation that I'm doing something well. Comments are definitely helpful, but I think since DPC2 was launched in december, it has not been as helpful of a tool as it was in the past. I think the temporary anonymity of a comment let the commenters be a little more honest.

To each his own! Glad you are enjoying a little success and let's hope it's just getting some momentum. Good luck! - Bob
