Watching Wimbledon, I got an idea :
How about a tournament style challenge?
People sign up and are paired up.
There is a topic for each round. Everyone submits photos, but
you advance to next round only if your photo scores more than your opponents.

Each round could be a week (just like regular challenges) or lesser.
Lesser might be more exciting, but voting would be harder.

This could be overlaid on the regular challenges as well.

What do you think ?

I think its a great idea.

Oooo, I want a handicap!

Seriously, though, I think it sounds like a lot of fun but would probably be a LOT of work for the S/C folks.

Great idea -- it sounds like a lot of fun.

But, would the pairing be random or by some other measure (such as average score or such).

Double or Single elimination?

This would be interesting and encouraging enough on it's own that topics could easily be removed without removing the challenge.

This could actually be fun. I'd probably sign up. It would take quite a bit of planning and organization that I wouldn't want to put on the SC to moderate. But if we had a SC approved "moderator" to organize it, maybe D&L would have time to set up some special speed type challenges for us to be able to make it work through the very fair voting system. I think that if possible we should force the people IN the tournament to vote on 100% of the entrants, from the beginning to the end of the tournament, if they're still in competition or not. This way we maintain a constant voting base from the beginning to end.

Or we could play it in the forums based on real challenges, sorta like a fantasy game... for example everyone who wants to participate signs up in a thread, then people get paired based on average vote recieved, then each week say based on the open challenge results people advance to the next round. This would cut down a lot on special organization etc. Plus open challenges are open to everyone so no one is excluded and they are unpredictable and everyone can vote on them. Lets do it!

Bump.
I like the ideas of overlaying the tournament on the open challenges.
It would be nice to not play it through the forums.
SC anyone ?

In my persona; opinion it would be best to run as suggested -- as a "fantasy league" arrangement overlaid on the regular challenge results.

I don't think the admins have any time to code this -- I think the forums is the best place.

Set up the rules, then start a new thread for the signups -- when that's done, arrange the draw or seeding and create one more new thread for the ongoing results.

Someone will have to be in charge of checking the challenge results and maintaining the tournament bracket. For simplicity, and since it's an experiment, I'd suggest limiting the field to 16 or 32 for the first time.

Note that this will require the participants to submit to every challenge for a while ...

You could have two brackets, non-ribboners and ribboners, then the final would be ribbon against non-ribon for the Blue & Red and yellow would be the bracket before against each other. Great fun.

That's an interesting idea. This will bring out the most consistent performers here.

I suggest that the current system, through the average score, already brings out the most consistent performers.

I disagree. The current system is on a 'participate as desired' basis. Each person can choose to participate only in those challenges that interest and appeal to them -- and thus avoid the challenge topics that they would, perhaps, not do as well in. In the proposed tournament, each paricipant would 'have' to participate in whatever challenge came up or forfeit the match.

It is this chance of being eliminated by no interest or knowledge of the random topic that concerns me to the most -- but perhaps everyone taking the same chances of random removal evens that out. I'm still not sure about it though.
