Does anybody know if just plain 'ol photographers can get a press pass into a place like NASA. Has anybody ever done it??

Ask NASA...

I suspect that you would need to be accredited by a major publication to even be looked at...but I'm not sure what access is like at NASA. Clearly some areas are off limits...

Just thinking out loud, not helping much!

What the cloud said. But here's another angle you might try. Are you in school? NASA is big on getting young adults and kids involved with their programs. There might be some sort of youth pass you might apply for.

find a foreign photography magazine and print up a press pass w/ some photoshop skills. show them the magazine and your pass! NASA may be a little tougher, but other events this works great.

That's bad advice, it will earn you a reputation that you can't shake...no one will take you serious as a legitimate photographer. What happens when you want to go back and complete your story, but in the meantime they've found out that you're fake?

Big no no. Not good for the photographer AND the profession.

Besides what others have said... I think forging a press pass to gain access into a goverment run facility is an extremely bad idea.

You should go for it. I would make up a name too, like Mohammad Bin Laden. By the way, can I have your stuff when you go to prison :)

Just call them up. Try to talk to someone in PR or Media relations tell them you are interested in taking pictures.

You can also join link

And see if they can hook you up.

I covered a space shuttle launch for a small publication a few years back, but I believe they've gotten MUCH more strict about their accreditation process since then. I think you'll need to be with a fairly sizable news organization to get in nowadays.

I attended a launch with a press group in May, 2000, which is obviously before 9/11.

If you do get the opportunity, GO FOR IT! It was one of the most absolutely incredible things I've ever witnessed!!!

Just to add a couple other details...

When I went, there were several very memorable press tours that we were able to take prior to the launch. We had a chance to get right up close to the shuttle...

Also got an opportunity to tour the Vehicle Assembly Building, and some folks got to see the RSS Rollback procedure the day before the launch.

I also got to go to the operations building where the astronauts have their traditional breakfast, and then take the ride to the launch pad. The security for this was *at least* as tight as any presidential function I've attended.

This was one of the most exciting trips I ever took... I literally get chills when I watch shuttle launches on TV, just remembering what it was like being there for it!

10000mm Zoom lens ;-)

Could be a mile away.. lol

I have a press pass.. Via my mom.. I also do freelance work for the Gannette paper in town. Its a good 7 hour drive for me though. Unfortunately I have no available time to take trips right now.. I'd love to go.

I also went to space camp there years ago. Stood below the big vehicle which took the shuttle across campus there.. very neat.

I met a photographer while shooting a pro sporting event that swears by them.(IFPO) Says he has used them to get into many events and to get items published.

I have never myself used them though since I usually don't need help getting credentialed. So not really sure.

what's not to believe...there are some people who don't mind working their way up, learning a craft, learning the business, and then there are those who want to cut every corner they can to 'get it now'. some gleefully look in the mirror, proud of what they get away with, while others are proud of what they've earned...it's all a matter of perspective...

another view here

You don't need a foreign magazine...just start a website..."Space News .com" or some such and make yourself a press pass.

Excluding NASA and other biggie biggies, a 'home made' press pass could be useful for free admission and better photography access at sporting events (college level and under) and other things - amusement parks maybe, museums, rib fests, music festivals...
