Well, apparently I'm getting slightly better. I freely admit that my first submission in Decisions was awful. Based on everyone's comments in the discussions, I probably should not have chosen that challenge for my first entry. I am actually proud of this next try in Darkness, but the voting public seems to be only slightly happier with it.
Oh well, I guess I understand the term "starving artist..."
Good thing I have a day job.

Did you have fun taking both pictures? If so thats what really counts. This is my first challenge. I wish people would leave more comments. I like to think of it as brain exercise. I get that out of it weather or not people like the results.

Welcome from a relative newbie! My first photo also got in the 3's. I thought I was improving, but my bird shot looks like it might rival the first. Oh well! At any rate, the few weeks I've been here have been fun & I've already learned a ton, mainly by commenting on others' pics & studying the really great ones.

I also wish people would comment a bit more, but I guess time constraints are difficult.

Yes, I definitely had fun taking the pictures.
I got nine comments on my first entry - don't know if that's alot - and most were very helpful. I know there is a learning curve here. My greatest need is knowing what to do with the raw picture to make it better. This is a great place to learn from the folks who do truly good work.

Hi Walter! Welcome to dpChallenge! I just went and looked at your first entry and I liked it alot. I think the neat thing about dpc is that with every entry, you get more of a sense of what people are looking for, and certain pet peeves that will always get you "hits". Ans that teaches you to be pickier about your pictures and not to not settle for "almost right" and you find your pictures getting better and better. Don't get discouraged, because it WILL help!!! One thing I've learned the hard way is that soft focus is a HUGE thing that will almost ALWAYS cause people to dismiss your picture and give it a low score. Another thing is big borders. A definite no-no. And tilted horizons -- or tilted anything is going to take hits every time (interesting angles not included in that kind of hit). Anyway, I bet in a few months you are going to look back and see how much all this helped you to turn out better and better pictures. It will be interesting to watch! :) Good luck!!!!

This is my first time submitting to a challenge. I discovered that I could really use a tripod! Trying to photograph darkness just doesn't work handheld. My submission is doing better than I expected, though. 4.5!

I can't wait to see your work too Wende :) I know what you mean about a tripod. When I first started (and even still sometimes -- 32 challenges later), there was a comment on almost ever picture that it was too soft or that it should be sharper. Sometimes, I'd look at it and think it was perfectly sharp and focused -- but now -- I rarely take any serious pictures without a tripod. That's what I mean about getting pickier and pickier about your own photos. But I think it helps -- even tho it doesn't feel too great when you're getting all the feedback about why your pictures are not scoring so well. Good luck to you too Wende!!!!

Thanks, SandyP,

I have a little in-house help with my photos from my daughter, who has been a DPC member for almost a year now. We were in a camera shop a few days ago drooling over the tripods!

Anyway, I expect the next challenge will be better. I have a great idea - now if I can just get my camera to capture that, all will be well. :)
