Currently, I am looking to buy a lens with a fixed focal length. The Canon EF 35mm f/2 would be a good candidate IF ONLY i had a non-digital camera. Because this lens would be like a 50mm lens on my 300D (the 1.6 factor). I can't find any EFS-lenses with fixed focal length (35mm). Now for my question(s):

Wich lens does give me the real 35mm? It doesn't have to be from Canon itself but it has to fit on the 300D and be of reasonable quality. Price is also important (i could go for the EF 24mm f/1.4 USM but i don't have the $1,200 for it, also it's not really 35mm is it? 24*1.6=38.4)

I want to use this lens in low light situations AND to have pictures the way we see it ourselves (without distortions, e.g. in faces)

Thanks for your (attempt to) help..

for a 35mm equal you will need close to 22mm on the 300D.

I found a lens that might work..

price at BH

Zeiss makes a 21mm but it's a few grand and won't autofocus. However it's way better optically than anything else.

your looking for 35mm because you want a prime? because you absolutly need that focal lenght??

I have to say that if I was on a limited budget, I would chose the best possible zoom for the money. even as a CPS member I have to say that the tamron 17-35 2.8/4.0 xrdi is a surprising piece of glass.

@Gil P: I have a nice zoomlens and the kitlens but feel the need for a prime since i noticed i was using the kitlens almost exclusively at 35mm for a variety of shots. So it will probably be my standard lens! (if i want to zoom i will take out my EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens)

And i don't like flashing around a lot so a prime will outperform any zoomlens on that.. (except the 'few grand'-lenses ;))

@DanSig: I checked out both lenses on 'FM reviews' and the sigma has a better rating. About the Canon: "but if low-light wide aperture shooting is important, this might not be the best choice."

$400 is about the max i would want to spend on it because i might upgrade from my 300D sometime soon..

Still remains is the question why there are no prime EF-S lenses, except the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM? It looks like a great lens but lets 'focus' on the 35mm ;)

Simple reason is Canon gears the EF-S line towards entry level prosumers, these lenses only work on the 300D, 350XT and 20D, they will not work on the 1 series and the film bodies. I do not foresee Canon making primes in the EF-S mount.

If you want a lens with the same field of view as the unaided human eye, you'll need a 50mm lens, i.e. a lens that will give you 50mm on your digital camera. A focal length of 50mm is the same view that the human eye sees. I don't know what lens that might be though.

35mm is not the same field of view as human eyesight, so the image will be "distorted" at this focal length.

In actuality, when you take photos of your cats at 35mm, it's not the same as what you see with your eyes.

Really? I thought i 'learned' that 35mm was the human eye-sight.. Well in that case the EF 35mm f/2 i mentioned before is just the thing for me since that gives me around 50mm! Odd, i must find out more..

If you are using the kit lens at 35mm and require the same field of view, then a 35mm prime is what you would want. Even thought the kit lens is an EF-s mount, it's still 18-55mm, same as a non-EF-s lens would be, only the mount is different as the protrusion into the camera is greater than with other lenses.

What he said! There are a couple of choices here one cheap one expensive:

Canon 35mm f/1.4L for US$1119.95

Canon 35mm f/2 for US$229.95

I just picked up a 35mm f/2. It is loud, sharp, and focuses pretty fast. I think it's a steal at B+H prices
