Anybody ever been walking taking pictures and you see a another photographer doing a photoshoot? Have u ever taken some picture for yourself? If so is it illegal or something for you to post them to share with friends or something.

Actually it happens quite frequently here (San Diego) in Balboa Park. Usually a whole gaggle of photogs shooting 1 or 2 models... I was walking down one of the corridors of the Prada and all these guys where shooting this one young lady, so what the heck I stole a couple of shots.

We have a group called Glamour Photo International here (San Diego) that advertises itself as a way for Models and Photogs to get together and build portfolios. They Bring the models and for 25-45 bucks depending on the attire (or lack of) 10-14 amateur/pro photogs get to shoot the model(s) in different locations around town for 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Looks interesting but I haven't attended on yet as I not quite sure about the club...their website is 3rd class and looks kind of rinky dink.

I see shoots not ALL the time but regularly. And if someone stopped to take shots of a shoot *I* was going I'd be very very peeved. Some of my shoots have a lot going on behind the scenes with a lot of correspondence, consultations, etc and for someone to just walk up and snap shots would irk me to no end.

I don't know about the legalities other than it may be illegal to post pictures of people's faces without their consent. Maybe.

I got hammered for this one in the challenge, but I felt it wrong to steal someone else's models. So I gave it the negetive look. As I recall I used a long lens and they never knew I was there and only took the one shot.

Many things to say. First of all many pro photogs consider it rude for person to shoot over their shoulder. I'm an event shooter and it does happen. Most of the time I don't care, unless someone uses a flash and messes up my shot. As for legalities, sure you can shoot but have very limited use of the photos. Technically using them for your book (or website, brochures...or anything promoting you) is advertising and you need a release from the subject. Most people are under the assumption that because you took it in a "public place" you can do what you want. For editorial use this is true, but not commercial use, including self promotion. Even if the model signed a release for the photog who is shooting her, that release does not cover you and you can open yourself up for a lawsuit. Granted it is unlikly it should happen, but it is considered unprofessional to do what you guys are talking abut...at least with the photogs I know. I always introduce myself and make my intentions clear, and hopefully get a release...otherwise the photos are pretty worthless for selling unless you sell them editorially, and then that rarely pays much. As for posting on a website like this, I would never post a shot I didn't have a release. People do it all the time though with street shots.

While walking along the Seine in Paris a few years back, I came upon a gay movie shoot (the nature of which was confirmed by a gay friend later on). Staying well back, and shooting only for my own travel journal, I was fascinated for a hour or more. The film making mechanics have many facets, all of which were interesting to me.

But, no, I would never try to capitalize on such photos. Even for photojournalism.
