I'm in the process of picking out a Birthday present (I'm a hex 2C today) and have narrowed it down to 4 contenders... Canon G2 or G3, or the Sony F707 or F717...

Anyone have comments, suggestions, etc on these or other models I should be considering? I'll probably buy in 2 to 3 months...

Thanks all!

Canon G2 is great, I'm sure the G3 announcement will push down the
prices too. Not sure what features the G3 has over and above the G2
though.

There are also lots of people who like the Sony's you mentioned.

My main reason for going for the g2 over a F707 was wanting to avoid
Sony's memory stick technology and go for the more common CompactFlash,
which I could reuse in other places (other cameras, stuff like that)

Wow, I just read up on the new Sony F717. Very cool features, but their web page says "Pre-order today". To me, that means it is still in pre-production. Oh, I see you aren't going to buy "today", so that should be O.K.
I don't know Canon products, so can't comment there, but the Sony F7xx series is very nice. The features of the F717 aren't hugely better than the F707, but the camera body has evolved from my camera, the F505. I'd have to see an F707 to say if it were more like mine or more like the F717.
Hey, I just realized, Sony is starting to use similar numbering as "we" do at work. Our latest model is the 777, but most people know us for our more widely used 747 and 737 models. Do you know who I work for?

Good point Gordon, the Sony memory is unique to them, but I like it, it's a very small form factor.

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..........

Didn't they move all those Boeing folks over to Chicago or Wichita or some such place?

Just the executive staff, Office of the President, etc. that moved to Chicago. The factories are in the same places they always have been, Seattle, Wichita, St. Louis, and so forth. We worker bees mostly feel they went away to get away from us, but they say it was to be in a more global city. Spin is magic.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the discussion.
