I know not all of you will know my husband, Pete, aka Ganders but perhaps you'll join me in wishing him a very happy birthday! He's going to spending rather a lot of it playing with a new 100mm macro lens and a lightbox kit!

Here's a few of his DPC entries to share with you all:

And some of his portfolio:

Actually, if I have got the story straight, he ended up with the nickname Ganders because of a friend called Anders. As with most computer science students at university he took on an alias name to use online for usenet and gaming and settled on Gandalf, since he was a fan of the LoR trilogy. One of the places he posted often was an opinion newsgroup or such and it happened to be that he and another student at Warwick often expressed similar opinions. That student was known as Anders (name was Andrew and I think he also had a Scandinavian family background) and they came to be known as Anders and Ganders (or was it Ganders and Anders?). And it stuck... It's still his most commonly used online username though few of our friends refer to him in person as Ganders anymore...
When we first started dating (at university) I would regularly phone my sister and tell her about this new guy that I was besotted with and one day she just interrupted me and asked me what I thought I was doing two-timing Pete and this Ganders fellow since I'd just said in the last call how keen I was on Pete and now I was rambling on about Ganders again! ROFL!

Thanks all - and just to show you that I haven't wasted the entire day, here's what I got playing with my new light tent and shiny new lens - the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro :)

The light tent thingie is the unfortunately-named 'ephotomaker' from Lastolite (www.ephotomaker.co.uk), which does a very nice job of letting you get some useable lighting without requiring major structural work (i.e. I could do it on the dining table with a spotlight)

On the basis of a couple of hours playing with it I'd heartily recommend it to anyone who, like me, has looked at the price of just about every other form of photographic lighting toy and decided that maybe the onboard flash isn't so bad after all!

Thanks for joining me in wishing him indoors a happy birthday!

Wish he'd posted the coin macro he took before the strawberry - it was much more impressive!
