I know we all discuss this but I am gonna just say...

I DO WISH people would comment when they vote me real low. My score went from a 5.9 to a 5.5 VERY QUICKLY leading me to believe I got a bad score. The only comments I have gotten are positive. Well except for the person who didn't like my border on the photo - if they voted down FOR THAT I'd be a bit peeved. It's a very small border.... it's like my digital matting. LOL

I mean c'mon DPCers.... if you vote badly, please have the courtesy to tell the person why!

that is all. :)

I think that was my comment (as I made such a comment on one photo though it could have been someone else's), and no I didn't vote you down for it....but I do wonder if I had seen it without said border would it have triggered in my mind differently?

But no...didn't take off anything for the border

Probably not a good idea...

Did you look at the commenter's profile? Sometimes you can get an idea how they vote looking at their avg vote cast. If they're one of those avg of 3.xxx something odds are good they gave you a low score, otherwise who knows (may never know!).

Smile and have fun! ;^)

nope, average voter. oh well.... no biggie, was just REALLY thinking I'd break the 6 barrier this time around. Someday....

I wish there were no comments at all.. when you go through 300 images and vote for all of them, there is no need to put comments.. No time either.. But I do wish people voted more accurately.. In terms of how the image complies with the contest and rules, instead of personal likes/dislikes.. I think there would be potential 8s, 9s, and maybe 10s if people really judged the images accurately. But it seems as if one person will vote an 8 or 9 and the next a 1 or 2, making your 7 drop quickly to a 4 or 5 and never going back.

I haven't reviewed them all... still working on it...

I just finished adjusting my votes for the second time. Now I will go back and start commenting. Some of these were difficult to score since they were magnified shots and you have to weigh the very short DOF against the lighting and composition. Some interesting ones this time though. The one thing lacking in this challenge I think were the titles. Perhaps my own included.

I should have stuck with my original entry though.

How accurate is that though? I have voted on 100% of the challenges from Triangles on and I know my average vote has been higher that what the profile says. I even went back to silhouettes and counted my votes and I thought it should be higher. Then after Apple it did come up but not as high as it should have I thought. I will be curious to see what it reports after Lighting and Granular are factored in. I have been recording my votes and know what the average for those two challenges is and it should go up.

WTF?!?!?!?!?

my latest comment says that they scored my photo lower because they did not think I followed the basic editing rules!!!! I can't say why cause it would give it away but I TOLTALLY DID!!!

I am M A D

That's also stupid because people should vote assuming you did everything correctly. If they have some kind of problem with your photo they could request it for review, but should not vote it down because they don't know how to use photoshop to save their life.

EXACTLY!!! When the challenge is over, I'll reveal the comment...

I mean if someone thinks I didn't follow the rules, go ahead ask for a review... It'll be validated, I asked a million questions to the SC before submitting to make sure I did everything correct.

The think that urks me the most is it brought my score WAY down so the person gave me a 1 probably. And they're a newbie... ARGH

ya on my last challenge, within one day or so my score went from a 5.7something to a 5.60...right now i'm at a 5.85 but im not gonna count my chickens just yet

I hate that....people assume because they're not bright enough to do so that it can't be done. In my case, i'd score it and DQ request it - not lower the score and not dq request.

:(
05/26/2005 08:23:24 PM · #19
I am actually surprised it hasn't gotten a DQ request! lol

I worked HARD on my photo and I feel it's one of my best yet... so not deserving of the sharp decline it's gotten today. And I bet the commenter is not the only one who voted down because they thought I cheated. I wish someone WOULD request a DQ so I can get it validated and not have to deal with stupidity anymore. :(

Sorry to rant on, I am just annoyed

There is a smaller site that has contests like the ones here and there are maybe 20-30 submissions. It is easy to leave comments for all of the entries there. I think that if you score under 4 or 5 then you should comment why you thought it was "bad", but here at this site where there are hundreds of entries...I don't think it should be a huge deal whether there are comments left or not. We should be lucky we got a vote. I think if the point of someone entering these photo contests is to be critiqued then there are plenty of sites out there that have the critique club. ( as well as this site) Contests are for votes. Comments are a bonus.

I am a rather new member, and from what I have seen in the forums, there seems to be 2 schools of thought on this. One, is as you presented...votes are the most important aspect, comments are a bonus. The other is we are here to learn, and the comments are much more helpful in the learning process than just a number.

My take on this is, the challenges/competition is what makes it interesting and fun. But, I hope to learn something as well.

It is frustrating to not know why others felt your photo was a "3" or "4", etc.. or if someone thought it was outstanding, what aspect of it made it for them.

There are so many great photos in each challenge, what makes one stand above the others to enough people that it finishes with a high score (ribbon or not). With such a highly subjective medium, I feel feedback is very important.

Well said Tim. Some people will leave comments, some won't...everyone just has to accept it. Learn from the comments left and hope that more leave them as you enter more contest.
