A couple of things inspired me to post this. Not intended to be a "Hey look at me" thread; it's more of a response, really.

First off, I've had a few people ask about how I made this image. Secondly, after reading a recent thread about how Over-processing dominates challenges at DPC, I felt like a reality check wouldn't hurt to show that sometimes the truth is a little more obvious than you'd expect.

The following 6 images are my actual steps (recreated of course, since I barely possess enough foresight to even buy green bananas).

<--original
<--rotate and crop
<--clone out fence (better job this time)
<--quadtone, slight curves adj, dodge
<--colour balance; little red, little yellow
<--resize, border, no sharpening, save for web.

Note the absence of "Burning" step. cuz I dinna do it. I dodged the highlights a little around the horses arse to bring it out of the shadows.

Other than the cloning, most of the effect was either present in nature, or a result of underexposure and shooting into the sunlight.

just sayin.

Pffft! It's obvious the horses were standing in front of a 30' movie screen, ya' cheater. ;-)

Ya know whats crazy???.....Ijust LOVE the original composition. even if it was on the fly. I like the tilted comps though. The shot itself should have ribboned. Goo photoshop work though! Kudos, B

Nice step by step illustration. It's a great shot, as finished. But I agree with Brian: I really like the original! If you feel like a couple of variations, I'd love to see it without the fence but original comp, and perhaps with the tonal changes. You have three or more beautiful shots from the same exposure.

Hey, Pedro, Look at you! ;-)

Good job putting that info out. I think truth is more fantastic than fiction and rumors of your overprocessing were obviously greatly exaggerated! Congrats again!

The original reminds me of the old western song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" more recently done by the Blues Brothers.

Thanks for the step by step. The final product shows creativity, style and awareness of what appeals. Where do you get the inflateable horses?

I like the original, too! Not that the final isn't great work, but I really love and appreciate the original best.

While the original is a study in itself because of its laid back style the edited version with the sepia brings the image to a wider audience by boosting the tonal values and adding the "wow' element. This image vibrates with beauty.

Ditto. Exactly what I was going to say. ;-)

Can you show the same processing on the shot WITH the pole and full crop?
05/26/2005 03:38:01 PM · #13
What did u do in the quadtone stage....?
05/26/2005 03:55:13 PM · #14

I love that you did this- it really helps me understand some of the processes in PS I might not have down!!! So ummm... what exactly is quadtone?
05/26/2005 04:21:21 PM · #15
Moody did a Fab Tutorial on quadtoning.

I'll do the full version and post it here later tonight. I don't have the original with me at work...

What really classify as being "Over-processed"? Too much processing can be nocticed How?

You should have put the 'vote for pedro' shirt on the horse.

The term "over-processed" is usually used to describe those images that have extremes of saturation, radical color shifts, artificially high contrast, or other indications that very significant modifications from the as-shot image were made.
Problem is, some images that look over-processed have really had little processing; conversely, some images that do not look at all over-processed, are in fact very much changed from their original form.
What really matters, then, is if the final image "works". If it does, then how much processing was done is of little importance.

He was wearing it. you just couldn't see it because he was silhouetted.

uncropped, same treatment.

I like the original too, but you did a incredible job in photoshop with it.. Want to help me edit some of my horse photos...just kidding...

Man I wish I had taking this photo a week sooner... I was looking for gates (the challenge theme in our local meetup group) Oh well I guess that happens to everyone...Though the winners of Silhouettes are very good and mine still couldnt compare....

I have to disagree regarding the original, it feels awkward, as if the horse is going to tip over after the pole whacks it on the head. I think the rotate and crop was absolutely the right call on this one.
05/27/2005 09:29:05 AM · #24
How did you clone like that? You cloned it perfectly (the second time) ;)

I think you processed it well within the rules and I like what you've done. I strongly oppose extensive use of selective editing (extreme dodging and burning) but they're all legal and I think cloning out an irritating little post is the lesser of the three evils. Apart from the clone I like this image. The tiny dodge on the horses arse is cool, a bit if of minimal dodging is just dandy :)

Brilliant idea to make it quadtone and red/yellow - I like it alot, I think you deserved your placing

Alex

PS edit: nice tutorial

Me too. Especially since I don't like tilted horizons!
Nice step by step, gracias!
