Obviously the second one shows more action but the first one feels more... full of suspense, maybe, to me? What do you think? What should I have done differently? Comments on the photos are appreciated.

These were shot at the local Ren Fair with my Sigma 105mm. The aperture was likely 2.8 and the shutter speed, while I don't have it in front of me, was obviously pretty fast ;)

The first has more suspense and you can see both subjects more clearly. The second has a cleaner background though and is nice too. I'd love to see a tight crop on both of these, maybe from the waist up.

Thank you! I would have never considered a closer crop, I'll give that a shot when I'm in front of the originals. And thanks for the comment elsewhere in my portfolio too ;)

You're quite welcome. There's a Ren Fest coming up in NY in August. Usually I go just for the grog, smoked Turkey drumsticks and wenches but maybe I'll even bring my camera this time.

i think I would like the second one better with the first crop.

Absolutely agree.

Huh? You mean horizontal instead of vertical?
05/24/2005 08:57:47 PM · #8
I'll assume you mean horizontal. I'll give that a try tomorrow and post the results.

So, what's Ren Fest? (I like the pictures, by the way.)

Both images are very sharp and colourful. I like the horizontal composition better of the two. Some sense of motion would probably add quite a bit to the images.

Do you have any that aren't stop action?

Second one is much better. Shows more action and is more fun to look at.

I don't- I was specifically hoping to capture the splintering of the lances. I didn't think it'd have the same impact if they were blurred. Oh well, guess I'll have to try next year.... when I'm in Australia ;) That's okay, I think they do them there too!

I think they do them all over the world. Enjoy Oz. You'll have to go to the camel races near Alice Springs.

The more compelling of the two for me is the second, wood flying and point scored. The first presents a more detail of the combat. As to what to do different, both are good shots. I have seen shots captured just prior to both lances hitting with distance still between the horses, this creates suspense and desire to know the outcome. Just guess it depends what you are going for. Nice shots.

Thank you! It was my first time shooting a joust, not to mention the fact that I don't have a whole lot of experience shooting action in general- so lots of shots were flubbed learning to anticipate the moment. My positioning could have been better, but unfortunately we got to the arena after it had already filled up and I didn't really have my pick of spots. All things considered I'm pretty happy with the results, but you're right, I would have liked more separation between the two- or better yet, a shot looking right between the horses!

Every time I look at the photo with the wood flying I'm reminded of the movie "Knight's Tale". Ah, Heath :)

Here are some different crops based on your suggestions. What do you think?

Cool, do you mind if I post it?

Of course not. It's your photo.

Here's rscorp's crop:

I think this one...

...is nice just because you can see more of the wall, the banners, etc.

Anyone else?
