With search down for the forums I could not find an answer to this. I have a friend who just bought a Canon 20D. She asked me about RAW conversion on the MAC. As I'm a Nikon and WIN user I need help.

What RAW conversion programs work with the MAC and then can be read in PSE 3? Or can PSE 3 read and convert RAW? If so, does she need an upgrade as she can not get PSE 3 to read the RAW files.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi there.

Maybe this might help.

As far as I am aware, Photoshop software is the same on PC and Mac (with minor differences in keyboard shortcuts and preference settings).

I process 20D raw images using the Camera Raw plugin (version 2.4) on Photoshop CS.

IF she has access to PS CS then this might be a good option for her.

If she has PS Elements only I don't THINK the Camera Raw plugin can be used, but I'm not sure, as I have PS CS myself.

Canon's Digital Photo Professional 1.6.1 Updater for Mac OS X is available on Canon's website under the 20D downloads.

I believe there's a Mac version of Bibble. Bibble is a good app and supports many RAW formats.

The latest Camera RAW plugin for Photoshop Elements 3 and Photoshop CS2 will read files from a 20D. You can also use Canon's own software (which comes with the camera) or Graphic Converter.

Thanks a bunch to all who responded. I will forward her this thread. Looks like her best bet will be to get the plugin for PSE 3.

Thanks again.

edit: and get her to join up!

iPhoto that comes with iLife '05 has ability to read the canon raw files as well as process them and alter them. The limitations, however, on the software are basic at most. Photoshop should really be used. If the current version of Photoshop being used, doesn't seem to recognize them, go to www.adobe.com to get the update for that version to read the raw files.

The 20D uses a new RAW format that iPhoto doesn't recognize (yet). The recent Adobe Camera RAW plugin will recognize that format, but only works with the current versions of Elements and Photoshop.

No one's mentioned Capture One yet?

I changed from the dreaded PC to Mac only recently. Unfortunately, I had to purchase an upgrade to my license so that I could run the Mac version ( slightly cheaper than buying a Mac version in the first place ).

Quicker, I'm certain, than DPP ( which came on a disk in the box when I bought my camera, BTW) and with a better range of adjustment.
