Since we're on the final day, I thought I'd post up an image I consider to meet the challenge quite well, for a naturally-lit image. I've gone i a completely different direction, with something whimsical and colorful, but thought this might be of interest to people who are debating what "qualifies"; as far as I'm concerned, an image that expresses natural light as strongly as this ought to be well within the challenge parameters. I pulled it not because I don't like the lighting, but because I'm not happy with the composition itself, and the weather has shut down here so I can't reshoot anything like this. What y'all think?

I like the soft lighting here. Composition is fine also in my opinion, the only thing which I'd change if I could is the shadow on the fence on the right, it is a bit distracting. I am not sure how well it would do on DPC, it is probably too quiet to entice a voter to splurge :)

Here is my shot which I originally wanted to enter but decided to do smthg different instead

I was not happy with the light and shadows on the floor being too sharp and did not have time and patience to play with other lighting possibilities.

The lighting is entirely natural, it's a pure "zone system" image. I agree that the shadow on the fence looks distracting, I'd even say "artifical", as if I'd burned it there, but that's the way it was. That's my main beef with the composition, anyway. That plus I couldn't find a comfortable relationship between the fencepost and the door edge, and the door lamps look fussy to me. basically, I decided this image didn't have enough oomph to work witht he voters.

The one I've entered is almost certainly doomed, but I had a hell of a lot of funw ith it and I like it a lot, so whothehell...

Your shot has oodles of potential, but I agree it's falling short as currently posted,

I have lately heard a lot about Zone System in forums. Is there any tutorial or any forum which talks about what is it all about ?

The tones in this image are great. I am studying the zone system right now, and this image is a great example, showing many of the textural zones. I love the detail of the window on the right- you've given an exposure that shows the dark of the wood in the window and also shows the next zone below it. The lamp posts are not as black as the black in the door. Overall, great job.

Gaurawa, I would suggest purchasing Ansel Adams' book "The Negative". It is, in my opinion, the greatest book on the subject. The book describes the Zone System in detail. It is surprisingly easy to read and understand as well. Check out Amazon.com for some reviews.

Here are my "outtakes". I really tried something different with each, but ultimately found satisfaction in one other. Please leave comments if you have time. Thanks.

Three attempts. Must admit, absent a studio, meeting the challenge for this one in the general audience's eyes could be tough.

These are two of my outtakes for "Lighting" that I had submitted for awhile, and have decided to take a completely different tact.

In the first one, I felt the subject matter was far too subtle. Most of the people I showed it to didn't "get it".. that is to say, they missed the sorrowful look on the face of the "Man in the Moon" and the tears.

The second one I felt was far too subtle a connection to the challenge itself, for most people. Although, to me, this kind of photo is the epitome of a "lighting" challenge.. I do honestly believe that your source of light will also have to be in the photo to do well.

Having said all this, who knows how my *actual* entry will do.. and whether or not it's a better, or poorer choice, than either of these.

This accidental outtake is just too weird for DPC voters. ;O)

These may fit the challenge better than my entry but I don't like them as much...

Still trying to decide whether or not to leave my entry in... I think it could be my first sub-4 scorer, but I have a strange attachment to it :)

as much as I would like to, I cannot show any out-takes with out giving away my entry

Shot this with the challenge in mind but ended up getting something entirely different that I think fits the challenge better. I'm also curious about how natural light will score...

If these are the out-takes, looks like I'm on the wrong path again.... O well, I still like what I submitted.

I totally blew this challenge (as if I didn't blow the rest lol). I was way out their. I had pvc pipes with holes drilled in them and lights on each end with tubing running over the random holes. I then picked up some pvc grates. Like square ones....the large ones actually fit right over my flood lights. Didn't really do anything except diffuse them. I was messing with my smaller one about 30 mins ago and it fit on my 52m lens lol. So this is what it looks like with a 40 watt black light directly into the camera.
