Hi all -

I recently found another stock site that people might want to consider:

//www.imagevortex.com/

They don't go live until July, but are currently building their image catalog. It's still royalty-free, but you can set your own prices on the images you submit, ranging from, I believe, $20 to $300 per image. They take a 30% cut.

I have no affiliation with them other than being a participating photographer. It may be a good opportunity or not, we'll see. I am optimistic because the editors there have been very professional and friendly so far.

Melissa King has done quite well at some of the other sites. See her reports here:

Thanks for sharing that dsa. The pricing is certainly more attractive than the penny stocks like dreamstime and shutterstock. The big question is whether they can build buyer traffic. This one desreve a thorough look.

I don't think i will be uploading much here until they get a better uploading system. They need a bulk upload system.

Oh, yeah :)

Their pricing system certainly makes me hope they succeed in getting a good number of buyers - if only all the good photographers from places like istock would take their work and put it somewhere like that.

most of the stock sites I have used do not have a bulk upload system as they all require you to individually categorize and describe your image.

I guess shutterstock, does allow you to upload first, describe later, though.

Send them a change request. They were responsive to some (not all) suggestions I submitted to them.

I didn't see anything in the terms that the images must be exclusive. Am I reading it right??

From their FAQ:

Do you require exclusivity when uploading photos to ImageVortex.com?

No, you are free to upload the same photos to any other website at the same time. In other words, we require no material nor author exclusivity.

That being said, I am not posting the same things on the penny stock sites as I am here. While they say they are looking at a different category of buyer, I wouldn't want someone to see a $50 image on sale somewhere else for 20 cents.

well i imagine we use similar stock sites, so i am not sure i agree

istock, dreamstime, shutterstock, canstock, bigstock, myloupe, all have bulk upload systems of one type or another. Some are better than others, but they all have 'em

and yeah, i did email them, they said they were thinking of adding that (bulk upload)... i shall wait anxiously and see.

I stand corrected. I have not uploaded to some of those that you mentioned in a while, and they didn't use to have that feature, but it would certainly be a welcome addition.

I signed up, it looks like a decent start to a stock site

I really hope that this site does well. This is exactly what we need as photographers.

I recognize that the industry is changing but the fact remains that reputable firms are more than willing to pay a photographer (or their agency) their worth for a photo.

Twenty cents per photo is ridiculous...yet I know we all can't submit to Alamy or Getty.

I'm hesitant to submit too many photos as the site isn't live, but if this site turns out to be successful I will really be comitted to submitting more photos.

I just wanted to bump this...I'm impressed with the quality of the images they have collected thus far.

I highly encourage you guys to send your best images to see if you can get them approved. The more good photos they have, the more viable they will be as a choice to designers...

I just wish they required exclusivity so they could guarantee it to their buyers...we'll have to see where this goes.

I agree. I have been posting better quality images to this site than I have to the penny stock sites. Still, the proof will be when they go live.

i signed up too ... we shall see :)

Do an experiment...open up pinupinoo, istockphoto, shutterstock and imagevortex and type in some words. I typed in "field", for example, and the quality of the photos is outstanding compared to pinupinoo and shutterstock especially.

If they can get their quantities up, I can see why a designer would be impressed.

I signed up but haven't uploaded anything yet. I may wait for the go live announcement.
06/09/2005 01:49:25 PM · #23
I signed up because this is the first stock site that isn't worth pennies.
06/09/2005 02:01:15 PM · #24
I have signed up. Now to get some images in...

I don't know if that is a fair statement. pinupinoo, maybe, because it is also a newer site but I have been amazed at the quality of images that some people have submitted to the penny sites. They are *very* high quality. (Take a look at the shutterstock "most popular" page, for example. You may get more crap to wade through because they have a large image catalog, but to say that the penny sites have poor quality is, I think, a mischaracterization.

That being said, I reiterate that I personally am submitting higher quality images to the sites that pay better.
