I am classically trained to only count in 1/3's.

......ouch.

I got this in my emails today, at first I didn't really care how it was done... Now I can't look away 'till I figure out what's going on...

when it's 13, the guy an the left is missing the top of his head ... so 12-1/2

Hey, all. I actually got this in an e-mail last year and wrote an e-mail back to the person who sent it to me describing how it's done. I even drew a little picture (sorry for the poor quality of the picture - I was in France and the computer I had there was horrible). I'll paste them here for anyone who's interested:

==================
It took me quite a while to figure out how this trick worked. At first I was stuck because I kept concentrating on the guy that seems to have been created by the shift (the top guy in the second row from the left). Eventually I realized that it's a mistake to think that the one extra guy is the only change from before the shift to after... nearly every little guy is a little different. The key is realizing that many of the guys are SHORTER after the shift - that's right... they actually created a whole new guy piecemeal out of some of the others.

I had a hard time getting my mind around this idea, so I created a picture, which I've attached to make it a little more clear. The yellow lines delineate how the pieces are broken up for the shift. I put boxes around the parts that correspond in the before and after pictures. For instance, probably the most obvious instance of this breaking of guys into pieces to create a new guy is the shorts (boxed in green). If you look closely you can see that one pair of shorts in the before picture is broken up to actually create two separate pairs of shorts in the after picture. Similarly, three shirts before became four after, three faces became four, one set of legs became two... and there are probably more, but those are the ones that jumped out at me.
