I believe this is a Red-shouldered Hawk but I'm not sure. It doesn't exactly match the descriptions of any of the common birds in my area. The photo was taken at Sutro Heights in San Francisco a couple of years ago.

This site may or may not be of help: //www.ggro.org/idhelp.html
But even if it isn't there are some really sharp pictures there--click on the "photo album" button then the "Raptors in the Field" link.

We have a nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons in San Francisco -- it could be one of them.

BTW: Nice shot! I like the 238,000 mile DOF ...

Don't think it's a falcon. Looks more like a hawk, although I'm having trouble identifying it. Pattern under the tail doesn't seem right for Red-shouldered Hawk. The underside of their tail is banded black and white. I think it's a Red-tailed Hawk, but 100% sure.

looks like a red-shouldered to me

This is a Red-shouldered hawk. See how much darker the belly is and how the tail shows strong banding?

Another example

Still think is a Red-tailed Hawk.

I have a sure-fire way on how to identify pigeons... they read!

One of my favourite birds is the ever boastful Pamela Anderson bird.

Thanks for all the replies

KaDi - I spent a lot of time comparing the photo to ones there as well as the All About Birds website and a dozen others before I asked here. It's really driving me nuts. :(

Beagleboy - There are five subspecies of Red-shouldered Hawk, at least one looks similar to the photo. That's why it was my guess. All About Birds RSH page.

smilebig4me1x - All the photos of Red-tailed Hawks show bands on their tail feathers. There are none on the bird in the photo.

Kind of annoying that all the different hawks look so remarkably similar. If anyone else has an opinion feel free to post. I think I'm just going to go with majority rule in the end.

Thanks again.

I'd take vtruan's affirmation of the red-shouldered hypotheses as about as good a confirmation as you can get :-)
