since there are so many entries into the open challenges it would be nice to have a third type of challenge or a new criteria for the open challenge..i've only been here a few months and lately there are so many entries in the open challenges with just Blahhhhhh..when i first came here, there were about 300 entries and now theres around 500..dont really know how it would work but i figured someone might have some ideas, because i cant imagine how many there will be in a few more months.

I am also new here as well. And I thought about this as well. One of my idea's does not relieve the situation. Say we get more then 400 entries on one challenge. They should break it into I and II. Same end date but 6 ribbon winners.

Maybe more to your point. What about new people 0-6 months compete in a different category. Then 6-12 in another and 12 and above. Not sure if that helps the madness either.

I think part of the problem is few challenges running at one time that are open. One challenge a week and everyone jumps on it that are non members. Even the 24 hour challenge had 135 people I think. As the site expands and the more challenges you have then commenting and voting will become a larger part and might slack off.

I am sure they can Query how long members have been registered.

I can possibly get shot for this but maybe only allow registered users so many open challenge entries a year. All the more reason to become a member.

Maybe do it on a monthly basis. Like 2 times a month. Which would be which ever 2 they choose to do. But if everyone becomes a member still have the same problems.

why not make an open challenge for members and 1 for non-members(unpaid)? This way it is broken down into 2 groups and everybody is happy.

I think we already have a members only challenges and then open is for anyone. The problem is the open is getting 400-500 people and the Member only is getting about 200-250.

That is a good idea.

Snother problem with non memeber and members is member paid....I can see alot of people leaving because they are not getting their monies worth in their estimate.

Monies worth??? Are you for real??? Its like $25 a year. Most people spent more then that foolishly without even thinking about it or realizing it.

NEW CHALLENGE TYPE:

"First Come, First Serve"

These challenges would put forth a topic. Just the same...but they'd be limited to the first 100 challenge submissions. They might have more interesting criteria.

"3 red plums, 14 toothpicks, and a shell. Using 3 sec shutter exposure."

They would not be "speed challenges"....but require a bit to gather the composition together.

Oh I am not saying it is expensive. But when people pay for whatever it is. Limiting them to entries isn't a "bonus" for signing up and becoming a member. Basically a non incentive to become a member at all. Sure you get 25mb of storage but if you do not sell prints it does not matter. The only other difference is you can update your stats instead of on the hour.

But whats to stop someone from entering a photo to hold their spot??

I like the idea of capping the submissions. But alot of people do not have cameras capable of 3 sec. shutter delay. I am sure you just used it as an example. But putting limits on equipment might turn some people off.

Easy. Do not allow photos to be changed once entered.

i don't think that would help the newbies improve if they broke it into categories based on experience on DPC. i'm getting better (i think) because I scored low amongst the masses, including the masters, and now I'm starting to look harder at my own work. if I had competed only against newbies, I'd think I was really good with probably higher scores (especially if it was all newbies voting.)

maybe they should hold the challenge so only the first 300 entries are eligible. like a limited time offer.

"Limiting them to entries isn't a "bonus" for signing up and becoming a member."
[[[So is a 1-day speed challenge. ;) This would not be the only challenge. But would be one that would be for those members who don't want to vote on 500+ images.]]]

"But whats to stop someone from entering a photo to hold their spot??"
[[[First come, first serve entries do not allow you to update the photo.]]]

"But alot of people do not have cameras capable of 3 sec. shutter delay."
[[[Just an example and a tip of the hat to the Rubber Ducky speed challenge. Not all cameras could meet the f/stop requirements of said photo shoot either.]]]

again whats to stop someone from entering a photo just to hold their place then changing it when they got a better one???

I understand your points and I did not mean to lump it into beginner/novie itermidate and advanced. Alot of people join who are experienced photographers. Their was a guy yesterday who had been here a year but only had 105 profile views and entered one challenge. Not sure of his experience. Just was trying to get an easy way to sort members without experience.

The highest number of entries is 638, and that was six months ago - since when it's dropped, and is now climbing again. It's an emergent phenomena, and will sort itself out.
