It has begun slowly, but I feel the tide shifting!
Neither a Macro of a bug nor a human eye won the free study challenge!
And no water splashes either!

As a matter of fact, the new trend appears to be birds!
(4 out of the top 10)
I certainly have no objections.
Especially since Imagineer's Vulture photo is one of the finest photographs I have ever seen.

Yey for us... we can change!

Gringo un-submits his picture of a large bug splashing water into a human eye…. And quietly walks away in shame.

Are we starting to outgrow our "eye candy" phase?

Are we starting to accept the genuine even if it shows some flaws?

I hope this place forces me to change my signature.

Bring on this revolution!

I doubt it...I almost got the brown in the free study and a revolution (to my liking) would include all of you hailing me as your king and painting me blue like a ribbon.

the only thing that bothers me, is the sheer level of perfection expecded from most voters. It's insanity.

Not sure what you mean but I think I'm inclined to agree that we expect a lot from the voters, although I don't know if I'd call it insane. To use novels in an analogy in place of photos, do you mean expecting them to know the difference between best sellers and true literature? It is too much to expect that all users are superior judges of photography, especially the newer users? Probably. But they should be willing to learn to be better judges, and we should be educating them. And as a group they can be expected to be a little better than the general public, afterall they are photographers.

here in the northeast (usa, that is) - things aren't quite green, yet ... the flowers aren't quite blooming yet ... and there aren't many bugs to be seen yet

be patient ... they're coming

:)

ps ... just proves that different photographers are on different pages. it's my desire to improve my macro photography this summer, so i'll be shooting bugs ... i know it's been done, but "I" haven't done it and I want to learn it. For someone else, the same can be said for splashing water maybe. But in general, I agree. I can't wait for the day that a street shots wins a free study.

For me it's an oxy-moron. It's a double edged knife really. I think alot of voters expect every shot to be perfection, while we the entrants expect them to be perfect in understanding our visions.

The fact that good photographs are now winning is a good sign for DPC.

IMO, up to this point the voters have done very well rating the best images at the top. This challenge is no exception.

Harvey, I couldn't agree more and hope there is change in the forecast.

Am I getting a different front page to everyone else?

Revolution? *boggle*

Two of the current blue ribbon shots may as well have "DPC Trademark Winner" stamped across them in big red letters. Well maybe not, that might have hurt their scoring, but you get my point ; )

3 of my 5 highest scoring shots (including my blue ribbon) are bird shots, so no change there either.

No, no revolution here. Move along folks ...

No offence to *any* of the ribbon winners btw, they're all well deserved : )

I agree. I've never shot true macro- yet and I want to learn too. So expect bugs from me this summer also ... and maybe even a water splash.

I also feel that when we are talking about macro, we should look beyond bugs. Those macro lenses aren't designed to shoot bugs only, you know :)
