I am going on vacation. I have (2) 1 gb memory cards. I shoot everything in raw. Does anyone know how many pics a 1gb card can hold while shooting in raw?

for your camera, in raw, it should hold about 140 pictures.

If you only embed a small jpg with the RAW then probably about 160 - 170 per card. I usually get between 80 and 85 on my 512.

One way to check is load one in your camera and see what the camera tells you. It's usually pretty close though how many actually fit depends on the images taken.

this is strange. I don't know about 10D, but on my nikon, one 1G card holds about 200 shots (~5MB each), and they are both 6MP cameras

you can always shoot the snapshot type photos in jpg and switch to raw for the artistic pics.

All manufacturers store images differently. A friend has a Pentax *ist and he only gets around 80 images on a 1gb card.

hmm I think I have Large-fine jpg embedded with my RAW files. How do I change this ? I don't even want a jpeg if that's an option.

It's not an option to remove the jpg but reducing the size is possible through the menu - custom function 8.

interestingly, when my 1G card is empty, nikon shows that only 87 frames will be stored, but in fact, as I said earlier, it stores twice as much. Very strange, but I can live with this :)

It depends on how big the files are. I appear to get anywhere between 130 and 160 images/1 GB card with my 10Ds and embedded small JPEG.

I get at most 61 on a 512 with a 300D.

If you set ISO 100, 161 pics, if you set the imbedded JPEG to small.
I agree, it's silly to add a JPEG to a RAW image. A RAW image ends up being about 8MB b/c of imbedded JPEG image and some extra information written with the image. My suggestion is to delete as you shoot and to use JPEG instead of RAW for your "snapshots" and RAW for "Keeper" type of pictures, get more memory, use others PC to burn the data to a CD, or bring a laptop.

The file size is also dependent on the image itself. 6MP does not neccesarily translate to 6MB. I have images anywhere from 5 - 10 MB in RAW.

Depends on the details you have in the shots. More colors mean a larger file.

Bring a laptop or get a digital wallet, or a portable burner if you can before the trip.

Even though I take only jpegs, I have taken more then 1,500 shots in a 1 day shooting. Without my Archos I would never be able to do that with only 2gbs of memory cards.

How many days on vacation?

I will be in Cancun for seven days.... seven wonderful, warm, fun filled days and beautiful sunsets with my camera and a margarita... I can hardly wait! Anyone ever use a Lexar 1gb card? SAMS has them for $70 and I wondered if they are any good. I will definitely take the advice to shot snapshots in JPeg. In fact, maybe I will buy the Lexar card and use that one for snapshots in Jpeg and use the other two (which are probably faster... Extreme IIIs) for keepers. Thanks for the information. I wish I could afford one of those portable hard drive things. That sounds like the perfect alternative.

Do the portable devices run on batteries? I'm going to a motocross race in a few weekends and will not have access to power.

You're better than me. My "keepers" often turn out to be "snapshots" and my "snapshots" turn out to be "keepers".

If I were going on vacation for seven days I would shoot everything RAW and not be without a laptop. I would probably also buy more cards. You just know the Maya temples will eat up more than 2GB in an afternoon.

I believe they do (or take a very long extension lead ;-) )

1000 photos in an afternoon? It's a good thing you shoot digital...

Not sure where you get 1000 photos. It would be more like 300. But yes, it is good I shoot digital.
