Boi, I am a gud speller or wat? Sorry If I was to go back and edit all the time it would take me forever. I am not very good at typing, so it takes me a few minutes to get a sentence typed. LOL

Nu uh...I'll have to show more leniency towards fellow victims of the blaring white :P

... or any of the 16 basic windows colors?

Im all seriousness, the background for voting should be grey. The background color does have an effect on a photo when you view it. White and black are color neutral, but grey would also be luminance neutral. Photosig and some other photo sites use grey backgrounds. The only problem is it might mean re-designing the site's appearance significantly.

The new dpchallenge will have a neutral grey background. For those who don't feel it's enough to set their image, solid borders will be allowed as well.

This new dpchallenge wouldn't happen to be unveiling at midnight, would it?

Not this week, anyway...

OK, a question for people who know more about this than I do:

Internet Explorer and some other browsers allow you to use your own style sheet in place of the one specified by the site designer. Theoretically, we could create a style sheet with a grey background that people can use when voting (just for now). However, I've tried and can't seem to make it work. Is it possible?

Woohoo!! Thanks to research by puppet10, here is a new version of the dpc style sheet with just one extra line at the top that changes the background colour (in a kind of messy way... neither of us know CSS properly). Save the file somewhere, go into IE, to "Tools - Internet Options - General tab - Accessibility button (down the bottom right)". Check "Format documents using my style sheet" and browse to find the saved .css file. Then it should have a grey background.

Of course, you'll have to turn this off if you do any other browsing :). Clunky, really.

Edit: you can also check the box that makes it override the site colours, and it makes it more uniformly grey.

Something even cooler: if you use Opera (as I do), go into "File - Preferences - Page Style". There you will see Author Mode and User Mode preferences for page styles. If you have "My style sheet" checked in one and not the other (it's on in User Mode by default), and load your sheet in the box at the bottom of those preferences, you can then click a little button on any page to toggle between Author and User modes (pages are Author mode by default).

That's a bit complicated, but what it means is that you can use the style sheet I linked to in the above post ONLY for the voting pages by toggling to User mode, just by clicking the little button next to the address bar that looks like a sheet of paper with the corner folded over. All the other windows you might have open stay the way the author intended them to look. Nice :).

I prefer the background color to be changed to BLACK. You can analyze a picture better if you have a black background because you can clearly focus on the picture and the contrast of colors is more evident (specially for color pictures).

I don't think B&W pictures will look better with a grey background. It seems to me that you will not have a clear appreciation of it.
