this photo. Such a shame that it placed so low, and not a little to do with people looking for graphical symmetry rather than what the challenge asked for. I just think this is one of the best shots I've seen here - genuinely meaningful, which is all too rare.

why do people think that placing in the top 50% and getting over a 5.0 is not doing well?

(that said, i gave this shot a '9' and would have liked it to have done better, but that's . . . life)

What e301 means, I think and agree with him, is that for a more experienced jury concerned with photographic qualities only, this picture would have been top 3 material in this particular selection.

top 3 is a pretty strong statement. but without guessing where 'experienced' juries would come out versus, as you are implying, the riff-raff who live on dpchallenge - yes i agree that in general, many fine shots don't get 'proper' recognition with this rabble . . . (especially mine! ;-)

Hm... I'm sorry, but I can't diagree with almost any of the top 10 here. Which would you replace? Xertion's superb winner? One of the lake reflections? Gordon's night shot was THE single best IMO. Pcnowley's shot was completely impressive. Pitsaman's strawberries were practically elegant. KarenB's 'interlaced' was fabulous, as well.

The easiest single screwing last week was bod's shot. //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php/i/16616 If you don't like that shot as much or better than the tigers, we can't talk photography at all!

Jason - don't take this personally. I like your shot a lot. I see the symmetry in composition and I wish one of us would win, if just for exposure for our same camera. I just think calling the jury inexperienced because they don't agree with jj is silly. JJ, I love your shots - you're one of my favorite 10 photogs here, but sometimes...*shrug* There IS no accounting for taste.

Although it is a good shot and fit the challenge well, it lacked luster so to speak. It is almost that by being black and white we were robbed of the beautiful color of the cats. I would love to see the same photo but in color.

i'll take the lions over a set chess shot any day of the week.

Over THAT chess setup? *shakes head*

Then forget the babies, pets, sunsets, chess sets, flowers...

It's the complete inability to see those subjects as still having worthwhile shots that limits what people dare to post in challenges around here.

Have to agree with you there, Mavrik-- this was one of the shots that received a "10" from me this past week. The tone, composition, everything... was absolutely beautiful! And the reflection captured in the king was marvelous.

Can I re-quote my phrase 'genuinely meaningful'?

I wouldn't hang it on my wall, and one of the top ten I would, but 'life' would be a shot I'd return to again and again in a book. Which would you consider the 'better' photo? Most of the rest are very pretty, even beautiful in one or two cases, and some are interesting, but 'life' has passion.

That's what I meant.

Oh, and it's also well composed, exposed, and all the rest of the technical stuff. As are all of the top ten.

Oh wow. This thread is about my picture! Thanks a lot Ed, I'm very honored and glad you liked my photo. Thanks to everyone else as well. Top 3 is crazy though. I can't argue with the top rated photos being where they are, I just thought I would at least be in the top 100!
I'd love to get more feedback on that picture and my work in general, so keep it coming! If you want to check out some of my other stuff:

mavrik -- i don't take it personally, and I didn't even know this thread existed. I don't realy care much about my score except for the fact that low scoring shots will be overlooked more later. I don't call the jury inexperienced. There is no accounting for taste.
The only thing that bothered me was the photo that was right above mine. No offense to the photographer, but really?!

p.s. now, my color shot is doing really badly, hanging around 4.6, which I knew it would, but I really like it. oh well.

Wow, thank you. My eye's literally popped outta my head when I saw that : )

I find it difficult to feel 'screwed' with a 6.2 and 23 top quality shots above me though!

Meaning is extremely important for a photograph to be "artistic" and not merely "technical." I tend to prefer nature shots to chess, probablly because I don't play. I liked the choice of black and white for the lions picture -- it made it more emotive in my opinion.

I frequently disagree with the top three or top ten for challenges because it seems like there have been many occasions where gimmicky has won out over what I consider to be photographically good. The photographer has spent hours setting up some cutesy shot which looks appealing because it adheres so well to the challenge, but which really has no photographic merit whatsoever. But obviously I am in the minority in thinking this or the photos I thought should win, would.

I can help but feel the main problem with the shot in question is actually a problem with composition. Take a look at the top 10 - each shot concentrated on nearly perfect symmetry. Most people knew that in submitting and voting that these types of shots were going to score higher.

I find it a challenge to take common knowledge like mentioned above and make it work for my subject. It's one thing to shoot a very powerful image featuring caged lions, but it's another to incorporate symmetry (and how other people will portray it) into the shot.

I would just like to say this about the challenges. Many, many times I have scored low photos that I really liked, simply because I felt they didn't meet the challenge. I like the lions shot a lot, but for symmetry it doesn't work for me. I'll grant you symmetry IS present in the shot... in the poses of the lions, the unformity of the cages... it's in there. But you have think about it too much.

My first submission here taught me that if you don't beat the voters over the head with "This photo meets the challenge!" from the very first moment they view it, your score will suffer. It's as simple as that.

This is not a fine art competition site, it is a weekly challenge site. If you can create (what you consider) fine art, AND meet the challenge in the minds of the voters, you MAY do well... For I have also seen many great pieces that fully met the challenge fare poorly in the overall scoring. Which is why I feel it is so important for everyone to submit work that "they" are happy with, and let the scores fall where they may.

Scores?? We get scores here?????

I agree mcmurma...let the votes fall where they may. Trying to second guess how the viewer will vote is a useless and most times, disappointing venture.

hehe. Trying NOT to is turning out pretty disappointing too!
