I have a D1 and D100. The regular flash units aren't calibrated to digital. You have to use mamual on the flash setting. There is no TTL for these cameras and Nikon has no intention of doing it as of now. There is another company Lester Dine who will be coming out with a ring light that will give TTL. I'm anxious to see that. You will have to experiment with setting and guess on f stop to use. I do mostly close up work with the 105 macro lens and the SB29 flash.

I'm not certain about the D100 but with the D1 the problem is that the camera tries to pre-flash (like a lot of digital cameras do) to work out the correct exposure. All Nikon flashes (except those designed for the F3) are supposed to work with Nikon digital cameras to some extent. Usually this means you have to use them in automatic or manual mode (as opposed to 3d matrix TTL). Don't know about the Sigma but since it's 100% compatible it should work just like a Nikon flash (i.e. manual/automatic).
If you want 3d matrix TTL then you need a "DX" suffixed flash. The first of these was the SB28DX which was an SB28 adapted for use with digital cameras (but works perfectly with film so you can use it on your F100). It's quite a bit more expensive than the SB28. There are now the SB50DX (cheaper version) and a new one which I thnk is the SB60DX.
I don't know of any 3rd parties who yet make a fully functional TTL flash for Nikon DSLRs, but it can only be a matter of time.
