There seems to be an opinion, shared by a few, that CHOCOLATE, the indisputed queen of all candy (including, candy bars, such as snickers, etc) is not candy, and will likely be voted down in this weeks competition. Could this be? Everyone who reads this post, please respond with your quick opinion. I love chocolate and fully intend to use it at least to some degree in this weeks competition.

Chocolate is the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of candy, and whatever you do don't tell the people at Hershey's that chocolate is not candy. Hershey Foods has made a fortune for years telling the world the infamous "Hershey Bar" is candy!

Chocolate is candy to me.

But I would have to say that icecream is not candy. I don't care if it is chocolate or not. It is not candy, to me anyway. Just to warn you. If I see icecream I will vote it low.

Hershey's is candy. But only people who don't know what chocolate really is think that hershey's is chocolate.

Chocolate is a flavor, or ingredient. Not all chocolate is candy though. There are chocolate candy bars, chocolate covered candies, chocolate flavored candy. BUT chocolate in and of it's self isn't candy. It can flavor other things like cookies, cake, pudding, ice cream, pie, soda, etc.
Definition according to Grayce...:-)

Grayce makes a good point. So, snicker's, M&M's, etc are in, and definitely qualify as candy. But ice cream, cake, cookies, are out. Even if the cookies have M&M's in them

It amazes me how specifically a group of people can define something.

Chocolate in any form is part of the brown food group, and one of the essentials for good nutrition. At least on my food plan it is!

No Hershey's is a horrible, greasy, sickly mass-produced excuse for chocolate. If you ever try the real thing, then hershey's just never comes close. Its similar to how instant coffee is nothing like real coffee, or how tinned fruit compares to fresh fruit.

Ah, but it's so much more - the crumbliest, flakiest milk chocolate in the world (and the adverts are good too).

Actually, they're all sweets (not candy) where I come from. And I'll be voting any sweet-related thing equally, whether it's ice cream, chocolate, or whatever. So there.

Flake is possibly God's gift to chocolate. There's just nothing in the world like it. It's a pain in the tush to find it in the US. As an American, I shall agree with all those that say Hershey's is not chocolate. It just pretends to be chocolate. ;)

It is indeed interesting to see Americans (mostly) trying to define an English-language word for a global English-speaking group.

"Candy" as used in North America is simply the equivalent of "sweets" in the rest of the English-speaking world (as mentioned below, I think). Ice cream, therefore, definitely counts, therefore, as does virtually any form of chocolate concoction.

It would be chauvinistic, at least, to vote down ice cream, for example, simply because one's personal use of the word "candy" is limited to a one-country usage.

So... Sweet=candy?
04/08/2003 06:34:38 AM · #24
Candy is what you would find in a candy store. Candy stores don't sell icecream -- that is reserved for the icecream parlors. Chocolate is definetely candy -- it is sold in the candy store. The real question would be gum....hmmm? It's sold with candy, in candy stores, but you don't actually eat it. Now that's the real trouble. I also agree that Hersheys is a poor excuse for chocolate and I confess to not knowing what flake is but find people who have such proper names for their ice-cream toppings very offensive and tasteless. Come on, get over yourselves, dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate anyway.

The American Heritage Dictionary disagrees with you. It seems that not all sweets are candy, but all candies are sweets. In my humble opinion Ice cream is a pudding, and all photographs containing any kind of Ice cream, not accompanied by a legitimate member of the candy family (such as a Flake), should be severely dealt with.

can·dy
A rich sweet confection made with sugar and often flavored or combined with fruits or nuts.

sweets
Foods, such as candy, pastries, puddings, or preserves, that are high in sugar content.
