As another poor college student I have to disagree - A 50mm 1.8 lens is a great $100 cheapo lens. I just have that, the kit lens (18-70) and another cheapo $100 70-300 lens. However, even with this inexpensive combo, I'm able to take a lot of shots that my point'n shoot (Canon S30) simply can't do (as well at least). I've noticed a large difference in shooting with a DSLR and feel that it has really helped enhance my understanding of the technical aspects of photography. It really comes down to your needs - if you are able to take the shots that you want with a prosumer, go for it.
If you need to be able to change lenses, use external flashes (not just slave flash), low noise at high ISO values, greater focusing speed and greater speed in general, go with a DSLR.
That said, if you can find a Rebel for $450-$600 I'd say go for that. With the hacked firmware you have most of the options that the 10D and D70 have, and many here are very happy with that camera.
