I am very sure this subject has been discussed many many times....but I want to get feedback from others so I am bringing it up now.

How many of you are just a bit uncomfortable with the area in Comments where you can check "This comment was helpful"? If some one praises my photo I am tickled and flattered but I don't know if I find that helpful, if someone is insulting and rude that sure isn't helpful. There are some comments that I truly find helpful but most are just either flattering or rude. Don't get me wrong....I love comments of any kind, lol.

I wonder if we don't need some more boxes to check. Like maybe one that says "I really appreciate you taking the time to comment" or "That was just plain rude".
How do the rest of you feel about the comment box and its limited options.

I wish there were a few more options to choose from, but in the meantime, I check every single comment I receive as "helpful," even if it was rude, thoughtless, insulting, or just plain nonsense. I appreciate the fact that someone took the time to look at my work and made the effort to respond to it.

I mark most of the comments I receive as helpful. If they praise it, yes its moral boosting, if is about some technical error or improvement, its helpful. I don't mark comemnts helpful when its about something which I know i didn't do on purpose. e.g. I got a comment on my current submission that the subject should be more centered. I placed my subject following the 'rule of thirds' or 'golden ratio' and I know placing this in center is goign to ruin the effect...

I had wondered the same thing .... because I wasn't really sure about it. I look at it as more of an "acknowledgement" that the comment was read and received more than anything else. I don't know if that makes sense or not :)

There is currently little in the way of feedback on comments given, so I check the box as an acknowledgement that I have recieved it -- I will at times ignore someones comments just as I would ignore them on the street if they approached me with the same attitude.

As the mantra of internet forums goes -- 'Don't feed the trolls'.

What if we could have a "Report Post" button to bring a non constructive comment to the attention of the site council?

Same here. There have only been a few comments I haven't marked, and those were simply offensive.

I think the SC has their hands full already. To do as you suggest would amount to high level baby-sitting... When you get those non-constructive comments you just have to let it go and get past it. Unfortunately they show up more frequently than is desired but they really aren't worth the effort to try and corral them.

I appreciate all comments, except for the downright rudes ones, even if the comments simply states something along the lines of "I Like it" it may not help me in the future but I know that my photo affected them enough to take the time to comment on it.

I usually check the box as others have said as more of an acknowledgement that I have read it, except ones that are totally meaningless or rude.

Thanks for the feedback....I appreciate knowing your thinking. My thinking was that I felt a bit uncomfortable saying something was helpful if it wasn't. I considered checking all of them just to be polite...then I reconsidered, LOL! Oh well, I still havn't made up my mind.

To me, any comment, being flattering or Rude, which includes some constructive feedback about my work is helpful.

Someone that says: Your picture's amazing, i love the colour tone'. Its flattering and constructive, since there's a reason why he liked it so much.

Someone that says: That picture Rocks! its so Beautiful' doesn't give me anything. So its not helpful.

(note: i chose positive feedback exemples 'cause its nicer to read ;)

At what point does it become appropriate to respond to comments? As in, if someone asks you a question about your entry via a comment, should you wait until after voting ends to reply? (I'm not talking about a rebuttal to a rude comment....just one where the person was interested in your image and wanted more info.)

Yes, wait until after the voting is finished. Otherwise you risk being perceived as trying to influence the voter; and you undermine anonymity unnecessarily.

If I notice a photographer has never marked any comment helpful, then I don't comment. You just don't know if they read them - and they certainly aren't moved enough to acknowledge it by simply clicking a button. it's just courteous isn't it?

A comment has to be completely mindless for me not to find any help in either the positive or negative.

I mark all the comments I receive as "helpful". It's my way of keeping track of the comments that I've already read.

i agree that it is the simplest way to acknowlege that someone took the time to do more than just glance at your image, especially when you are commenting on images in your portfolio, or on images long after a challenge is over...

That's what I thought, too....thanks.

I don't think you should feel uncomfortable about not checking the box. If I were to tell someone that I liked their picture, but didn't give them any helpful information, I wouldn't expect them to check the box. It would be a case where I just want them to know that I liked their picture.

Speaking of comments...Skip mentioned comments on portfolio images and I have a question. Is there any way to know if a comment has been posted to an image without actually opening them up and looking at every one? Some DPCers have fairly large portfolios - how do you keep track of comments?

I know on your profile page there are columns that update showing the number of comments for challenge entries, but even then it's hard to know which numbers changed...

Someone posted a comment to one of my images over a week ago and I missed it until just recently and my portfolio is thin. Hard to mark it helpful if you don't know it's there. ;^)

yes, look on your profile page and click on comments received. it will give you a list of all received, as well as whether or not you've checked them off...

I've seen people use both:
1. Mark every comment as helpful, except for a few (rude, pointless, troll)
2. Mark very few comments as helpful, only the ones that 'help' you improve.

I personally use #1, but see the point of #2. However, in the absence of consistency, the following metric is distorted:

On your profile page, it lists both
a) Number of comments made
b) Number of helpful comments made

If everyone used #1 above, a poor ratio of b/a would denote that the member usually makes rude/trollish comments
If everyone used #2 above, a good ratio of b/a would denote that the member makes thoughtful comments that help people improve.

Currently, that ratio is just another statistic.

Well THAT's embarrassing! I love an easy solution...learn something new EVERY day! ;^) Thanks Skip.

There are also photographers that don't mark ANY comments as helpful, regardless of their content.

what's even better are those who ask for comments, get them, don't check any of them off as helpful, don't pm the commenters to say thanks, don't acknowlege any thanks in the thread, then wonder why no one looks at their threads any more...

In the process of going back to look and see which comments to Check, I ran across this again. It has got to be my favorite comment, EVER! Thank you Imagineer! It was in the Best of 2004 Challenge. Here is his comment:

" This had better ribbon or I'll run naked along the platform at Camden Town tube station. : )"

BTW the photo didn't ribbon.
