I am looking to create a .php websited for myself and a friend. Does anyone have any experience in the following:

1. Php based web construction.
2. Flash animation creation.

I would love any information I can get from those who are in the field. Ideally, this would be a professional looking site, but who knows. I am open also to maybe hiring someone to do the site themselves. All comments and helps are appreciated...thanks.

It all depends on what you need. I did it for our Z club including the content managment side. If you're willing to learn and know HTML already, I'd recommend this book.

Also, check out this site for HTML, PHP, Flash, CSS and many other tutorials.

My web hosting company, networkeleven, offers a lot of other goodies including three gallery packages free with their $11/ mo package. The galleries are, I believe, based on SQL & PHP: Gallery, Coppermine Photo Gallery, and 4Images Gallery. Using a canned package is probably a much easier way to get up and running.

I've not used any of these but the standard offering is to provide directly or through third paries 'skins' which are editable and which will determine the look of the web site. LOL.

Any particular reason why you're using PHP? Scripting usually implies content management (gallery, content, site navigation, etc). It also implies having a database running on the backend.

I'm a developer for the university so if you have any PHP questions I can help. The "canned" packages are a breeze to get up and running but if you're looking for functionality that they don't provide, then custom is the way to go.

Have you looked into PHPNuke? I am constructing my new site (again) right now using it. Uses PHP and works quite well. RHoldenSR has his up using this also to see. Mine should be up within a the week....I hope!
Hell I guess you can look at mine (in construction at this time) Photos4Aidan.com. Front Page is definitely still in construction. Alot of content and photos (using Gallery) to still go in, but that is the basic so far

can you integrate a php page with flash?

^ yes, you can integrate PHP and Flash. (Flash communicating PHP)

How big would the site be?

If its going to be big then I would suggest installing a CMS(Content Management System).

You may want to check out Open Source CMS for try out a few Open Source programs.

The Macromedia Developer website contains alot of good and detailed tutorials for animation.

Good luck!
