I recently took a picture to enter in a contest on this site, and was not suprised to find that you must enter exposure information. However, I cannot figure out my ISO for the picture, I had the camera set on automatic. What do I do?

open it up in ps or element and under file...select info

Here's my constant problem. I work on two computers, the one away having Photoshop and at home Image Expert and other useless programs. I edit at the other site and transfer them here. Since I don't have PS or Element accessable, what else could I use?

If using Windows:

Using Explorer Right Click on the Picture, choose Properties
Click on the Summary tab
Click on the Advanced >> button

Scroll down to ISO Speed

ED: Note that my Canon Powershot Pro1 recorded everything in the EXIF data except the ISO, I don't know if that was a canon prosumer thing or what.

I followed those instructions, but still cannot see ISO. In my ignorance, am I perhaps looking for the wrong thing? Is it worded different? Man, I'm starting to feel pretty dumb.

If anything else, I did download the PIE thing this sites FAQ recommended.

I have the same problem with my Canon. The Canon Zoom Browser software gives all the info, except in the ISO slot it says "Auto". I set particular shutter speed and aperture, but the camera chose the ISO & didn't seem to put it in the exif.

P.S. I am probably even more ignorant than Joe Cool. ;-)

Right mouse click Start button select Explore
Browse to your Picture
Right mouse click on your picture and choose properties

(There is an advanced button on this first tab do not click it)

Near the top click on the Summary tab
There will be a Advanced >> button on the bottom, click that one.

You should be able to see all the EXIF data Camera, Lens Arperture, Focal Length, Flash Mode...etc.

If you see those but ISO is blank I had (still do) the same issue with my PowerShot Pro1...Had to guess what ISO I was using.

If all you see is Width, Height, Horiz. Res, Vert Res, Bit Depth and frame count...then your exif for the shot has been replaced by editing software...I have a couple of Shareware Programs that will replace the EXIF unless you buy/register the software.

Is there some assumption I can make for the contest form, or should I simply leave the spot blank?

I entered "Auto" in the box, after all, that's what my exif said.

Sorry Pollard, didn't see the post before I said that. My case is the latter. Is there a solution, or is it alright to leave that blank?

oops, missed your reply that time, Strikeslip. I think that's what I'll have to do.

IrfanView is free and small. Put it on both of your computers. If the data is in the file IrfanView will read it.

I think that unfortunately the information really is not there. I believe some of the Canon cameras actually just record it as "auto", which royally sucks river bottom.

I just got the Canon Powershot G6 and took it out for a spin this morning. I had set the ISO to 50. Most of the shots I took are showing "ISO:Auto" but a few are showing 50. Go figure. All were taken on auto (Portrait and Landscape) so I can't figure out what makes the difference.

I'm going to assume it's OK to submit ISO speed as "Auto".

Very interesting.

So far, love the new camera.

For the Canon S1 IS, I can't even find where it would be listed in the EXIF -- there's no obvious entry for it.

Posting the ISO value is not a requirement for entries, just appreciated as part of the mutual education process.

EXIF data for my Nikon 8700 reports shutter speed, f-stop and so on; but reports ISO as Auto. So that's what I'll be reporting.

Yup, I noticed the same.. when entering challenges with S1 IS, I used to look at the camera again to see what ISO setting was used. Its not present as a part of the EXIF.

Maybe this has already been mentioned, but if you have the camera set on automatic, it has the latitude to set all parameters (such as f-stop, shutter, etc.). If you use one of the manual settings, M,S,A, etc., will it then allow you to set the ISO to your liking, AND report it accurately in the EXIF?

The Exif file for the Canon S1 IS will show up in the "Exif" program or the Thumber program. It isn't accessible with Photoshop CS or Elements.
They are both free.

I can access the EXIF with IrfanView -- I just don't see an entry for ISO Setting, auto or otherwise. Perhaps one of the other programs extracts more info ...

Thanks for the suggestions, I went ahead and listed as AUTO.

Roland, good to hear you're liking the camera, I sort of lucked into getting mine, and so far the ISO prob is the only issue I've had. Hope you get some good pics out of it!

Breezebrowser reports ISO for the Canon S1 IS.
Bibble still doesn't (latest version)

Thanks. Yes, it's GREAT. I finally sat down and read the instruction booklet last night and took it out to the beach this afternoon (fortunately only 4 blocks away!) It worked really well. I have to admit I was a bit concerned when the battery just kept going. It finally died after 692 exposures (and a lot of time with the screen on working my way thru the book!). INCREDIBLE!

And yes, I did confirm that if you put it on the Program setting, the ISO you set will show up in the EXIF file. I got it because I wanted to have the option of ISO 50 (which my Fuji S7000 wouldn't give.)

Glad you are enjoying yours too. Looking forward to seeing some of your work in the challanges! (I'm being KILLED on "In the beginning" !!! BUT I like my entry!
