After reading all 7 comments I got, I am still somewhat mystified as to how my entry ended up so low (4.78, 134/172), so I'd really appreciate if a few folks who scored it less than 6 (I don't want to know exactly what) could add some additional comments, either in this thread or in the entry-field on the photo's page, as to how it's lacking in candidness, composition, lighting, image quality, good taste, or some combination of these.

For reference, here's my alternate (vertical) crop of the same image, to which I've also added my alternate ("punny") title. My true outtakes are in the same folder if you want to look at those.

Call me old-fashioned, Paul, but I need the torso to complete the image. I gave you a 5.

I hate when people criticize things I can't control, but I guess the lack of those things is what makes an amazing photograph. I personally like crop, but I don't like the background. It and all of its elements are very in-focus, and they really compete for my attention.

I abstained from voting on that image. But you would have gotten something like a 5 from me. The image itself stirs almost no emotions nor does it strike me as something I would consider viewing later on. Due to the fact that I was not there I can't tell you the "possible" ways of making this photo better but I can suggest some things that might help me.

Having a better composition would have helped me. For that particular shot I imagine seeing the woman take the photo of the person and having both of them in the photo. Use of a wide angle lens maybe? Different position? Perhaps (after looking at the shot) I would have gotten behind the woman and very close to the ground and try to fit both of them in that way.

Thanks folks. I guess I was pretty happy to get that composition considering I was standing on an adjoining "pedestal" and holding the camera at my waist. I just happened to look over my shoulder and see these folks and just turned the camera and clicked.
I personally saw quite a few humerous elements, like the guy having to stand on a pedestal in front of that background, and I wonder what she's thinking as she looks straight at his trousers fly trying to keep a level horizon. Maybe the "punny title" would have been better after all...
I myself also liked the way the fence winds its way through the main elements witout clashing too much -- if I may create a mask and see if it looks stronger with the background de-emphasized.

I gave it a 6, for this exact reason. The photo didn't seem to pull my attention to any particular place.... everything seemed pretty interesting.

Well at least yours has got the legs? My horse didn't have her legs either but my subject was the man. Some things you leave out on purpose for that might be the way you see it?

it seemed like a smapshot to me.

The girl in the picture is very cute.... couldn't help but mention that... :)

For me the picture doesn't reach me. That could be my fault. To you this image means something. But for me it looks like a vacation snap shot. For me, a score of 6 or above would be something that really touches me. A candid shot of someone crying - or alone in a park with their head hanging down - with the look of dispair. Those sort of candid shots would depict a emotion from me.

My favorite candid shots were: the old lady, and the b/w of the Cop arresting the kid. Those were really interesting shots, because they told a story. Two people posing at Big Sur, doesn't tell me a story. But a kid arrested does or a old lady who wears the wrinkles of her life on her face... those sorts of things tell a story (at least for me.)

Thanks for supplying specifics...I was trying, by making a tight crop, to preserve the anonymity of my unwitting subjects, get rid of a lot of extraneous background, and maybe get people to think about what these folks were thinking about at the moment. These are two people caught in a personal moment -- maybe not so intimate as "the kiss" -- but one in which they are (supposedly) preserving their memories of this place, this time.
For further comparison, here is the uncropped frame from which I tried the horizontal crop I submitted and this vertical crop.
