I am attending an ice hockey game at the Meadowland in NJ tonight. Our local high school is in the playoffs. I have a press pass, so I can get pretty close wonder if anyone has some hints Thanks!...

I went to the last ice hockey game of the season in the Asia IHL a few weeks ago up in Nikko. First game I ever went to. I took over 200 photos but the ice in all of them looked kind of yellow until I'd done the post-processing. So I guess you've got to have the right white balance.
During the second period I went down to the ice level (I have connections...) and shot through the perspex - it's kind of difficult due to all the scuff marks on it. There was a guy on the other side standing on a step ladder shooting over the top of the perspex.

Thanks I can adjust the W/B, You are taking your life in your hands going above the glass, but, I guess that's the only option for a clear shot unless you have a super long lens. Were you have will the shots over all?

Happy? I'm not a big fan of ice hockey but I see it's a good sport (it just needs too much equipment). A lot of the photos had too much motion blur or were (gulp) crooked. There were just a few that were any good, really - and I did quite a few on continuous shooting.

I've shot a few for my school paper, here's some of my suggestions:
-Take a white balance reading from the ice, don't use a card.
-Shoot manual exposure, f/2.8 (if you have it available)
-I usually use an ISO from 1000-1600, so for the rebel, try out 800 and 1600
-I usually use a shutter speed from 1/250 - 1/400 depending on lighting, etc. I try to overexpose by 1/3-2/3 stops to correctly expose the ice. This can be done in post processing, but it adds noise.
-If you have your 300D hacked, use continuous focus in manual mode. If not, you may need to use sports mode to use the feature.
-Take a lot of shots
-See if there is a ladder or something from which you can shoot above the glass but without the mandatory netting in the way (watch out for flying pucks though)

I've got some of my shots linked in my profile
Hope this helps

(edit) This picture I took with my D70, most of the others were taken with a D1H

My oldest son plays hockey at the Junior "B" level and I have been taking photos of the some of the local games in SE PA.

I have had alot of trouble getting the exposure right, and most pics have come out fairly dark. The last game I was shooting in manual with ISO=1000, f/4.1, 1/160, Exposure Compensation +5.0.

Here are some examples of what I ended up with. I adjusted Levels a little bit with #'s 40 and 41, but the other two have had no processing changes whatsoever.

The Meadowlands should have much better lighting than I was dealing with, but if you figure out the perfect settings, please let me know.

Thanks,

Alex

I had similar results as Abarna did.
My lighting was also not so great..
Most shots were taken with shutter speeds between 1/200 & 1/400, iso 800 or 1600, and as wide open as I could get @ F/4.

The results are here.

HI All... Thanks for the advice. I'm downloading the images now and will post a few. I was able to get in with the media, and was offered a helmet to sit in the press box YIKES! No glass at all...I respectfully declined, Maybe if Wayne Gretzy was playing haha! I did find an area where the Zambone comes in.. that had holes drilled into the plexiglass the perfect size for the lens to fit through Awesome...The lighting was pretty good and I shot sports mode, and manual to cover all the bases. Stay tuned
