so my rebel is a couple years old, but has been a good camera. seems that over time the auto focus has gotten worse. but finally yesterday 30 shots into a shoot with a model, the shutter made a funny sound... and said: error 99. i've done everything to make it go away, and it wont. i searched all the forums here and found all the trick, and nothing works. i'm using all cannon lenses blah blah blah..... i think it's dead. just makes the funny shutter sound and says error 99. anybody have anything to say? i'm super bummed cuz i'm going on a trip to mexico this thursday and had planned to shoot a lot. i think i'm going to have to send this in... but i think i need a new camera anyway because i can't risk a camera breaking down like that.... so my other questions is.... Canon 20d. does the stock digital rebel lens work on it? it looks like the same exact lens.

oh, and also please send me money! not having a camera makes pete a grumpy boy.

i've done some great work with the digital rebel with action and models... anyone that wants to check out my galleries please go here: petesphotoshop.com
(newest at top) i always apreciate comments!

//www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=10347 is about the best info i can find...error 99 is a catch all code. could be anything.

get a Rebel XT! b&h has them on their site - i did not look to see about a ship date.

How many shots have you taken with your rebel (total)?

any efs or ef lens should work on the 20d

The stock digital rebel lens will work on the 20D. As others have mentioned you might also consider the 350D. I just recently got one and have found it to be a huge improvement over the 300D and have actually sold my 20D because the 350D does everything I need.

From all the posts I read on the DPReview forum, this sounds like the good old 300D failed shutter. It was debated to death at one point. I seem to remember a figure of $200 for a repair (new shutter).

yep, i think your right. there is something wrong with the shutter for sure. i'm getting a 20d. my rebel is worn out. i think i've taken close to 10,000 shots with it. it's been a great camera but i've outgrown it now anyway.

anyone wanna buy a digital rebel with a broken shutter? hehe.

10,000 aint a lot, should go for a lot longer. I had a similar problem with my 300D. Stoped working, odd error came up (not 99).Had to reset all the camera settings, change battery, change lens and set the shutter to single shot and its been fine since. I am up to over 16,000 shots now and its off for a service later this week as I am shotting a wedding in May.

As I understand it Err 99 is an error outside the camera itself, i.e. lens, CF card, battery etc.

Have you tried swithcing all of those? 10k shots isn't much, I just sold my 10D and the shutter there is good for atleast 60k shots. I'm just waiting for my 20D.

Alternatively take it to a camera repair-shop and get them to check it out, might even be something covered by the warranty :)

This is a bit like having a car with 30,000 miles on it when it starts loosing power. Time to scrap it, no? Might need a new enginge, might need a fan belt tightened: some people get a new car, some get the old car serviced.

If the shutter is totaled, you might sell it for parts, but the error 99 just menas that the camera has no idea what the issue is, which is what it sais when the shutter is toast, and what it signals when the lens contacts are dirty. I had my 300d in to get it cleaned and checked out since It just passtd 50,000 activations, and the tech said it looked fine, ought to be good for the forseeable future.
