The Rebel XT (350D) with kit lens lists for $999. Probably find it a for a bit less than that. It should be on dealers shelves the 20th of March. The Rebel XT appears to be the most bang for the buck currently available. There is a preview online at //www.dpreview.com

congrats on your earnings John -so many of us pay a hefty price to continue our photography, i find it great that you have been able to pay off all your expenses.

i would suggest a 300D combined with some lenses if $1000 is all you can spend, because although a kit lens or 50mm would be great, you may want to have a variety of lenses. by going with the cheaper dslr, you'll be able to save money for other lenses! i managed to snag my 300D kit used, plus battery grip for $600.. sold the battery grip and it was essentially $520 for the used 300D kit. granted, that was quite a good deal at the time (and may still be, but i'm not sure) - and i did make sure to check out the camera and some test shots first in order to verify its functionality.. but if you don't need the extra megapixels and features of the 350, the 300 would be a good alternative.

I'd start with the Canon Digital Rebel XT with kit lens, and add a 1 GB CompactFlash card and a spare battery. Total package cost is 1114.97.

don't forget an extended warranty...you'll be amazed at how fast a year goes by ;-)

I tend to prefer insurance to an extended warranty. If you already have homeowners or renters insurance, you should be able to add a personal articles policy to cover your camera with no deductible for about $30/year.

I´d go for the 300D and 28-135 IS lens, $575 @ stop4camera for the 300D and $395 for the 28-135 IS

that makes $970, don´t think you´ll get a better combination then this for <$1000

Sensor damage and lost pixels are highly unlikely, and factory cleanings usually end up with the camera coming back with as much dust as it went out with. This leaves the shutter mechanism, which as I understand it costs about $200 to replace -- my recommendation not to order the plan was based upon the OP's budget, which I was already stretching with my recommended package.

With that said, if another $50 can be squeezed into the budget, you can get a 2-year-service plan, bringing the total cost to $1164.96 (note this plan does not cover abuse/acts of God (see FAQ and Terms & Conditions) - but that's where insurance comes in.

You'll never see the camera at that price, unless you buy the accessories that are supposed to be in the box in the first place, bringing the price well above the normal price.

well.. I didn´t know that stop4camera was a rippoff.. but the same combo costs just under $1100 at BH and I KNOW they are trustworthy couse I bought most of my gear from BH without any problems.

True enough, but I still think he's better off starting with the Rebel XT and kit lens, and adding lenses as he can afford them. It's a lot more camera for the money.

Rebel D300 with kit lens is $698 at //www.buydig.com and they're also reputable. :)
