I am looking at getting a ND filter but I have a question. I want to shoot waterfalls and have seen a lot of pictures that are shot with a ND filter. With all the choices out there (2X, 4X, 8X), how do you know which one to get. Is there some kind of guide or something that tells you which kind to get? Can someone help? Thanks in advance

I use the 2x and the4x and find them both good, you can use them both together, I have the "Marumi" brand and find them very good
You can also combine a Nd with a poloriser as well

That's the difference.

Another option is a graduated filter which is great when the sun is out and you don't want to get the top overexposed.

The purpose of an ND filter is to block out more light so you can open your aperture howver many stops the ND covers.

Go get a decent ND filter, I only use B+W myself. Most of the time I use a 106 ND that is x64 or 6 stops of light. That means that if the correct normal exposure in bright sunlight is f16, 1/100 and ISO 100 I can take the same shot at f16 2/3 and ISO 100 and get the same exposure.
