Hi there.. I was wondering if anyone on this site submits photos to stock photography libraries, and if so, what the minimum camera resolution has to be. I am interested in submitting my photos but my camera is 4.1 MP which I think might be too low. Please help!

Two recommendations:

Do a forum search here. There are millions of posts on stock photography already.

Check out the sites of the libraries you want to submit to. They probably have requirements posted there.

I think min is like 2 MP Camera
4.1 MP will be fine for sites like shutterstock

Thanks for the information - I've been reading through the other stock photography related posts and have come across shutter stock already. I was wondering about the bigger agencies like getty etc. I know I can contact these agencies directly but there are so many of them and I don't have any particular preferences at this time, so if anyone deals with them, I'd be very happy to hear from you. Thanks!

Anyone know of any similar UK sites? My Father in law is looking to sell some of his work..

Seems like the top paying stock sites require very large files, no noise, etc. Basically these are for those that own higher end cameras, and or dSLRs.

4.1 MP might be ok for small images. You need to understand that the 4 color process that they use for magazines is usually 300dpi. Convert one of your full frame photos to 300 dpi in PS and see how bis it is. You will be limitted to that size. News papers and a few other small publications use less dpi. You will have to set your prices with the size in mind. Most likely you will never get a cover shot with only 4.1 I would guess your best image might be a bit less that 5x7 at 300 dpi, and maybe smaller.

wow that is amazing! mind listing the places you have signed up for? I may just have to start using places other than SS, it sounds VERY lucrative :)

Now if you are looking to sell to web designers they you have plenty of MP's. Print media pays a lot more though.

I've just signed on with one of the agencies that produces images for Comstock and they require an 8.5 mp camera at the very least. You'll find the same with other larger agencies. Alamy recommends a 6 mp or larger camera and then they have you interpolate the images to make them larger using Genuine Fractals.

There are some smaller agencies out there that will accept images taken on a 4 mp camera - I started out at Acclaim Stock Photography when I was shooting with a 3 mp camera a couple of years ago, so it's possible, but you really need to contact the agencies yourself and see what their guidelines are. Most sites that are online have a page where they list their guidelines, so it's not that difficult.
