well my Girlfriend is looking to get into digital photography and this will be her first digital. She is looking for something with 4-7MP that she can get for $400(ish) I have been looking around and havn't had much success since I just got my 300D and she dosn't want something that up-scale (haha) yet.

I am open to any suggestions, thanx alot.

I would definatly suggest the E550 or the F810 both by Fuji Film or the Canon Powershot A80 or A75 iam not really sure what it is but all of those are pretty good

You could probably find a Sony 717 in that price range or close to it. It's a very nice camera and I like having the manual controls.

Don't forget she'll need accessories.

I think the Panasonic Z3 is a package that's hard to beat, small and powerful, F2.8 lens, 36-420mm zoom with IS. About $325, plus accessories. It's only 3 MPixels, but that's still excellent for most uses.

They do have a newer set of cameras about to come out, and they have upped the resolution.

She could also go with the bigger Z15 or Z20 for 4 and 5mp respectively. But I suspect most people would prefer a smaller camera which can be taken everywhere. Then if she eventually goes to SLR, she'll still have this as her take-around camera.

Kodak DX-6490. You can get one with lots of accessories on your budget. It's a terrific camera.

why would you want us to throw out our good cameras? hehe...

i'd say a canon A95, great images and full manual controls.
fuji finepix 5100 is also a good choice.

hahaha, I could have worded that better couldn't I have? eh well, you got the idea :)

It is a toss-up with the Dx6490 and the 5100... I am thinking (she is thinking) the money you can save on the 5100 she can get a bigger memory stick.

Remember--those do not have IS. Shooting indoors or out, IS is great. My little Canon S1 kicks my Canon 300D's butt indoors.

The latest PC Magazine reviews a number of candidate cameras, including the Panasonic Z15 and Z20. I don't put much faith in that magazine, but the article wasn't bad.

Canon Powershot S1 IS- a compact cam with an incredible zoom range, a fast image-stabilized lens, full manual controls and one of the best video modes around. It's only 3.2MP, but with so much zoom, there's less need to crop. It's $328 shipped at ibuydigital.com

I am just confused - Is the Fuji s5100 and s5500 the same or are there some differences? Which is better?
03/03/2005 04:14:58 PM · #15
Also how much of a difference does IS make? I mean does it help a lot in handheld shots?

Yes.

True, and she will be outdoors doing alot of flora pictures... I don't believe she will be using this for any indoor photography (except some studio shots of stuff for Shutter Stock. So for a camera that has 4MP that has IS what would be your top choice?

I bought my Minolta Z1 at ibuydig.com. I actually love the camera, but I got screwed over by the site. They charged me more than they were supposed to ($30 for shipping instead of $18). I never got my warranty information and they sent me somebody's else's invoice with all their personal info on it. Name, credit card number, all of it. So, I assume, someone else got my invoice with all of my personal info on it. I've called numerous times, never could get a person and no one has ever returned my calls. I wouldn't recommend doing business with them.

Kodak DX6490 can be had for $300. I saw it at $250 a couple of weeks ago. At that price you can buy extra batteries, tele, wide-angle lenses, memory cards.

It dosn't sound like we will be... Hopefuly all turns out well for you with your info floating around like that.
I didn't think buying a digital would be this hard... I knew exactly what I wanted when I got my 300D and got exactly what I wanted after buying it. This is a little more difficult.

But if it dosn't have the IS she may be turned off by that... This would be alot easier if she were here right now, She is off at softball practice.

Look on this page...all taken with the Kodak DX-6490. Browse through my portfolio; anything taken between May and December was taken with one. Check the ports of the others who have this camera as well. I never had much issue with not having IS on that camera. It performs exceptionally well, even zoomed in all the way. I'd still be using it if I hadn't gotten the Rebel as a surprise gift from Santa. It's a wonderful, portable, easy-to-use camera that will not disappoint. I promise. You can quote me on that. ;o)

Panasonic Z3 has IS but only has 3megapixel, but with a 12X zoom I can live with that. I bought mine's for about $270 after rebates. The new Panasonic Z4 maybe what you are looking for. It's basically the Z3 but with 4 megapixel. Not sure if it's actually out yet but will soon be.

There are no accesssories made especially for the camera. You would have to read Panasonic forums for info on which wide/teles you can attach.

Here's the Z4 info:
Z4

But if she's shooting mostly flora (do you mean flowers, or all plants, trees, etc. as the term literally means?), then you probably don't need the 12x zoom.

For flowers, look for the best macro capability, and the widest angle, e.g., the Oly Wide Zoom 5060 is 27mm equivalent at the wide end (though it might be too much money). For floral shots, I also recommend looking for a camera that supports RAW format, which is a weakness of the Panasonics and the Canon S1.

But for nature in general, including birds, etc., and general use, 10x - 12x superzooms are the way to go.
