As mentioned in another thread, I'm posting this outtake from my search for a "light on white" entry. I have viewed this on 5 different monitors and it varies between looking positively luminous (which is how the print looks) to downright muddy, depending on the monitor. I figured it didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of scoring or being appreciated, so I went in a complketely different direction.

My question is, how does this LOOK to you? I don't mean "is it good?", I mean "describe the tonalities you see." Of course, if youw ant to tell me it's beautiful that's ok too...

I'm seeing various shades, probably the first six squares on the bar. The layer at the top is the most white. Pretty unique shot. I bet the print looks great. Good job!

Not sure what it is, but it's a nice bright white to me.

There should only be 2 small shadow areas as dark as the middle of the bar. The whole image is compressed into zones VII thru IV except those shadows, which are in zone V, on my monitor. The top part is almost pure white, just a hint of detail.

It's a telephoto shot of some yachts shrink-wrapped in white plastic and on land for the winter, btw.

The central upper-third looks all white to me, and it's just a little too much for me -- I'd prefer of it have the hint of detail you see in the corners. The lower 2/3 looks great, with subtle shades and good detail.

For a change I had an "outtake" too, quite different from my submission (and probably better than a 3.9!), but it was too last-minute to edit/submit it.

I see tones from pure white to a bit brighter than middle gray, save for the small shadowed area near the center of the image, which is a bit darker. That small spot is noticeably darker than the rest of the image. I find myself wishing there were a slightly broader tonal range here.

I'll fix it up as a full-range image tomorrow and post that. it's pretty dramatic when it's not compressed. But this one prints so sweet.... I love white on white...

BTW, this is NOT desaturated, no color work at all. It's exactly the colors the camera saw.

Very nice shot Bear...I do believe that on my monitor I am seeing what you made reference to in your comments, namely the top portion being almost pure white.

Hope you do well with the photo you submitted.

Definetly not muddy! lol
I see it as being bright white, but not so bright I can't tell what it is. I think it has just the right light conditions.

I looked at this on my laptop monitor and on my 21" sony. Huge difference - crisper whites, less blue, on the Sony.

Robert,

I see from about Zone IV on up to about Zone VIII. The Z-IV is in the small shadow near the center. I see detailed highlights in the upper left and some non-detailed highlights other places.

I love the image, and the tonality is excellent. Tons of stuff to look at there. I'm not saying that you shoulod have entered it since I don't know what you did enter. But this would have gotten a very high vote from me.

This looks brilliant to me. A beautiful abstraction, nice flow and composition, a true playground for the imagination.

I understand your concerns about submitting this. I've gotten bad results on what I thought were good submissions that are low key. I did some extensive testing before submitting to the light on white challenge. So far so good for me.

Good luck Robert

I'm using a fairly old/crappy monitor and the tones look good to me.

The reasons I didn't submit it are two: 1, the image looked wildly different on different monitors and it seemed a gamble. 2, abstractions don't typically do well int he voting anyway. It's still one of my favorite photos of the year.

The one I did submit is "fun", and I'm technically happy with it, it sparkles well, but it's getting crucified. I'm used to crucifixions though, I don't think like most people do...

Not an outtake, but the color version of my entry is on this thread.

I tried to white it out while leaving the color in.. but it just wasn't working.

While I think this image fits the challenge to a "T" in my mind (which means nothing, right, lol) If I didn't know what it was, I would probably have voted it lower. However, being a Rhode Island native and my father being a commercial fisherman, I know exactly what you are shooting here, Robert... Great job, wish I had thought of it...
