Hey everyone,

I've been reading a little too much on the EOS Digital Rebel XT... and it kind of worries me... I wanted to move up a noch from the D70 so i decided on the 20D (since i really can't afford a MArkII or any other of those 3k+ bodies)... but now that i'm ready on the XT, it seems like a good choice as well (lower price too).

Comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hhhmmmm.....why are you going from Nikon to Canon? Just curious. Most people usually upgrade to a camera of the same brand cause they already have lenses and other accessories. I'm just really curious.

Nikon and Canon, both great, but wouldn't the Rebel XT be a step sideways? I think you should go with a D2h or the 20D. Although I believe the D2h is a larger step than the 20D. Not because it's Nikon, just because of where it is in the line.

I'm biased of course, but I'd say the 20D will still be a better camera...

The relationship will be like the 300D to the 10D.. The 20D is more robust, has some more software features and is faster. (from the few reviews of the new rebel, I've not seen a direct comparision yet).

If you've got no investment in lenses, I'd look at all the options that fit your budget... Read lots of reviews, ask some folks on here.

Then go out and buy the one that looks best in the mirror at the shop when you're holding it.. :-)

Cheers, Me.

I'd also say wait. Nikon will have an answering camera pretty soon. You also want to wait a bit for the actual user reviews to start making the rounds as well.

Have you seen this (Bob Atkins) feature comparison between the Rebel XT / 20D.

The XT is an excellent camera. If you have the means, go with the 20D. You certainly will not be dissapointed. The 20D is a better build than the XT. The XT body is plastic and the 20D is Magnesium. Much more sturdy and rigid.

As far as picture quality, they should be about the same. From what I've read they use the same sensor. The 20D sensor is slightly larger, hence the 8.2mp and 8.0 for the XT. If you need speed, longer battery life and durability, the 20D should be your choice.

BTW, I'm sure Canon will probably come out with the 30D in about a year. Probably would have a 12mp sensor, 802.11g wireless capability, bigger buffer and who knows what else.

A big difference for some of us is that the 20D is rated at around 100K shutter click and the Rebel XT is rated at around 50K clicks, whether this matters to you depends on how many photo you think you will be taking.

Thank you very much casualguy, this is exactly the kind of information i was surfing for! It answeres all the questions on comparison between the 20D and XT.

For my needs, its safe to say the XT just doesn't cut it. So the 20D it is.

Thanks everyone!

If they keep on their current timeline of Catch Up then I would say in about 2 - 3 years. I don't think anyone should have to wait that long to have the camera they want.

Be interesting to know where Bob got that figure from, I've not see shutter life for the 20 listed anywhere else, although it'd be nice if it is 100k..

Interestingly, as I found out the other day, the 20D actually has exactly the same wireless capacity as the new 1D2 MkII.

I thought the 1Ds MkII had inbuilt wireless, but it is actually a unit that plugs into it. Exactly the same unit works with the 20D as well, you just need a firmware upgrade (not sure if that is for the unit or the 20D.

Little bit of discussion on this in this thread: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=177314
