The business man in me loves the back but isnt so sure about the front

This has a nice impact! The predominantly green colors are attention grabbing, without being too much. Then only thing that doesn't 'feel' right is your web address location on the back. With the left part of it tucked under the image, it feels a little cramped there. Everything else about your design has a very open feel to it. Maybe it would work to place that info center justified under the Specializing etc info.

Hope that helps...

I agree with photodude. I really like this card and think it would be perfect for some situations, but it's not likely to get you many wedding gigs or traditional portrait work. This card would be great for artistic and creative clients who want to take advantage of your creativity. You might want to make another one with a more traditional image, just so that you can choose which card to give out in varying situations to different potential clients. Good luck, Jeremy!

You might note that it is your phone number

People might think those leaves are a certain kind, and think you're selling something else.

Curious? What would it cost to print (full color/photo) cards of this ilk?

There are too many different fonts used on the back. Stick to a maximum of two main fonts with different sizes.

Oh...and good use of the 'Ringbearer' font... :-)

$69 (or less) for 1000 @ //www.overnightprints.com

Edit: and what Joey said about the multiple fonts

i agree with joey. i like the card a lot nevertheless.
i think maybe a black, or dark colour of letters on the front might seem better, the website takes too much away from the image itself (obviously you still want it very visible tho).

photodude is right. The markets you are going after, lose the front and just use the back. You will get more business in those markets that way. You could always print the front by it self and have 2 cards, for different markets. Good luck

I changed it, now what do you guys think?

Honestly?

Too many fonts... and not particularly nice ones either.

I quite like the image on the front and the font there isn't too bad. I can see the reference to marijuana leaves. I can't imagine most people will jump to that conclusion but it's certainly worth considering.

I dislike the fonts on the back. The layout still doesn't feel well balanced to me. (Composition doesn't work ;)

Incidentally, I have had a number of items printed by Vistaprint (adding a glossy finish to the business cards) and have been very pleased with cost and speed. There was a mistake on one set of cards but the customer service reps corrected it and had replacements sent out immediately.

Great photo. If you've got to use a flamboyant font then choose Arial or something simple to accompany it. Also, I'd prefer just the photo on the front without the web address.

P.S. I don't agree with changing the images to suit different clients. Unless the kids are starving, I would never change my style just for money - which is essentially what you'd be doing. I don't do traditional, so I don't sell myself as traditional. Personally.

I actually like the second one you showed us. Might still stick with white type though.

I'm not a great photographer, but I do know a lot about marketing. Go with the original and don't worry about how many fonts you're using. Many fonts blend well enough together. The second version seems too busy and I have a hard time reading your web address. Clear is better and the first one is cleaner. Keep it simple. I'd be showing off your card if you were my photographer.

Photography is about expression and not about limited font usage! nice job. Oh yeah, keep the web address on the front. The contrast makes the photo even more eye catching.(If that's even possible) If in the end you can't decide, who says you have to limit youself to only one business card. (I have three.}And don't worry about people whose demographics are to small to use in your strategy. If you try to worry about everyone, (I.E. colorblind, people who don't like green, etc, etc)Your business card will never leave the discussion phase.

I'm the Marketing Director for a large and successful firm so I have some expertise on this. Define who you're trying to target and plan accordingly. Email me if you want to discuss it further. (it looks like you recieved a lot more info than you bargained for) Remember, you know the services you're selling the best. Everyone has an opinion but yours is the only one who counts.

From memory green is a very bad colour to use if a person in colour blind. I too find the Green used for your internet address / phone number a little difficult to read.

A deep yellow tends to jump out off a black background so maybe you could try that.

You're selling photography, you're going to use an image, then make the image as large as possible within layout constraints. In this case, let it run from top to bottom on the left side with a quarter inch gutter on all sides.

Lose the green, it cannot be easily read by some people, especially against black. Since the image is in B/W, I'd incline towards only white type.

Use the right portion of the card for all the info, with none overlapping the image. Right justify your type, instead of centering it.

"Specializing in:" is a weak phrase, particularly when you pick 3 categories in which to specialize. You don't need it — just list the categories on 3 separate lines, justified right.

Web addy and phone on separate lines, and specify whether the phone is voice-only or fax/voice, to wit: ph: xxx-xxx-xxxx, or ph/fax: xxx-xxx-xxxx, or something like that.

my husband is a graphic designer and he believes you shouldnt use anymore than 3 types of fonts. I love the front of the card. It makes a great first impression.

Your husband is correct, Lentil. Some would even say 2...

Or one font in two or three weights/styles.

A business card isn't really big enough to need two completely different fonts unless one of them forms a logotype for your business, and then you should turn that into (vector) art.
02/24/2005 11:27:26 PM · #23
Helvetica and Helvetica Bold, for example, are considered separate fonts of same "font family". Every different variation within a font family is called a "font". So yes, even considering "same name" fonts, no more than 2 or maybe 3 variations is a rule of thumb on a B/C. Except, as general has noted, if one of them is a logotype font, and even then you need to see that the other fonts "marry" well with that.

So you might have, for example, your logotype font in some heavy, blocky form and marry that with Helvetica and Helvetica Bold, and this would work fine.

I don't have much to add to what people have already said, but the leaves remind me of marijuana...
