I would just like to publicly utter a plea for harsh comments... I like being complimented as well as the next guy, but compliments will not help me improve. I promise that I will not argue with you about how you interpreted my photo, or ask you why you couldn't see my point, or curse you for being stupid. I want to be the best photog I can, so I need feedback. Negative feedback. Tell me what you don't like. Tell me my colors are stupid. Tell me it's oversharpened. Tell me the composition stinks. I do ask that you also tell me what you think would have worked better, but tell me what's wrong.

I'm very disappointed to see that the current DPC trend, due to all the childish responses to negative comments, for comments to be either positive or non-existent.

I love to get negative comments. They tell me what to improve.

PS - I didn't say "mean spirited" or "hateful" - I said negative. That means constructive but pointed.

Any takers?

Oh, yeah, you don't know which images are mine, do you? Oh, well...

Back to my 1 comment. I think I'll read it again :)

I totally agree 100%.

Sure I love positive feedback, but photographers thrive and improve on critisism as well! I love receiving constructive critisism, and I'm definitly not afraid to dish it out either! :P

You post a pic on a general site/forum, expect to get opinions and critisism!

I think positive comments are just as necessary. Without them, how would you know which aspects of your photography work well and should be considered for the next picture?

I love getting negative feedback. That's the only way I will grow. However, I do agree with nards656, "hateful," "mean spirited" comments are just not necessary. People tend to be sensitive and overly harsh comments can lead to people being hesitant to submit photos that otherwise might be ideal for their respective competition. I know there are a lot of disgruntled photographers (I personally know quite a few)...they sit at home milling over their self-proclaimed photographic genius and get unnecessarily offended when a photo doesn't live up to their expectations. That's a small minority of people though. I think most commenters are intelligent and make useful comments.

Sometimes I feel exactly the same. When my images are getting lower rating than I expected I want to now why and to be able to do better next time I need honest opinions.

On the other hand I think compliments can help you to find your right track and helps you to gain self confidence wich is important. It´s though undeniable that negative comments and harsh critique are in most cases more helpful as long as it is constructive and tells you whats realy wrong.

Over at The OEDILF collaborative dictionary project, there's a list of choices in one's user preferences allowing you to define what kind of feedback you want, from "Don't Bother" to "Please Offer Suggestions."

Maybe we can develop a list here, so we can be forewarned what kind of comments are most useful to the photographer. I'm one of those who doesn't care if you don't like something, but want to know why, or what you think is wrong. I may disagree with your opinion, but want you to feel free to express it.

Yeah! I'd love to see that. We had something like that on another site, we could select to have the initials "ICP" which stood for "In-Depth Critique Preferred" next to the photo, even when the photo was in its anonymous period, to indicate that critical comments are welcomed. Maybe we can have a symbol or initials next to the photo, and that would work even during challenges, where people will know it's ok to criticize.

Such a system would benefit both the recipient and the critic to know when it's ok to be analytical, even if it includes negative (but well worded) comments.

Any feedback is good for me. I would say I was a beginner photographer and need all the comments I can get. Pitty I'v had 65 votes on seperation and no comments. I need to know why its scoring 4.5

This is starting to sound like a good idea, to me! Not sure how well it would work, but a "Hey, I want your constructive criticism" flag during voting sounds like a GREAT thing.

Nards656, you are so right!

I am new in here and anxiously checking from time to time how my first photo is doing in the Bridges challenge (quite badly actually).
So I would very much like people to tell me what the hell is wrong with it????!!!!!!!

Instead, the wonderful people here are telling me how nice they find it and how beautiful little bridge it is???? My score is 4.something…

I understood that one is supposed to give some critical feedback if one finds a photo worth of a 3 or less?
So, I definitely have myself given some to every single photo I have rated as 3, 2 or 1.
And what do I get from that?
Today some stupid old fuck sent me and email and told me how arrogant, harsh and rude I am?
Yes, so? TAKE BETTER PICTURES you asshole…! I even tried my best with my very bad English to explain what I think was wrong in it and why it was thereby absolutely the most worthless picture in this challenge. And I have rated every single picture too.
Pictures I have given an 8, 9 or 10 I have totally left without comments. What is there to comment about? They are PERFECT!

I couldn’t hate more to se another 1 given to my photo without any explanation why.
