I'm thinking about buying a monopod. I have a tripod, but it's big and bulky, so it's not convenient to carry around.

What monopods would you recommend? Which ones should I avoid? What features should I look for? Should I get a ball head or a swivel/tilt head?

I was thinking it would be great if there was a monopod that, at the press of a button, extends to full length and locks in place. But on all the ones I've seen, you have to manually extend all of the sections and then manually lock each one.

Thanks for your help.

I use a Bogen 3245 Automatic Monopod (B&H) which has a twist-lock bottom section and a squeeze grip adjustment for the top section, not quite the push of a button, but you can adjust the height with one hand. On top of that I then use a Bogen 3265 Grip Ballhead (B&H) which again can be adjusted with one hand. This makes for a fairly heavy combination, but it can be set up very quickly and easily. Also check out the Bogen 694 Carbon Fiber (B&H), strong but light. If you have serious money burning a hole, look at the Gitzos.. (B&H)

Good luck
